2 years side by side: 2012 - Bottle - Earthy hops and nice malty sweetness to balance. Ruddy copper with minimal head. Nice grapefruit hoppy but balanced well with a malty brown sugar sweetness. A really nice imperial IPA, nothing fancy but well done. 2011 - Bottle - Sweet fruit, molasses, and alcohol heat. Ruddy copper with minimal head. Bitterness from the hops, but none of the flavor. Brown sugar, molasses and a bit of alcohol. Some apricot like fruit.

Tap. Pours clear amber with a medium off white head and decent lacing. Aroma is dominated by that silky smooth grapefruit that makes Pliny so good. Flavor is grapefruit, notes of pine, and a slightly sweet malt backbone. Finish is medium bitter. This is a very nice dipa.

Poured up on tap at the Missoula location with clear deep gold body and copper hues supporting a full semi tight off white head. The modest aroma has hints of both citrus and spicy hoppiness. The taste is nice and chewy with rich hop flavor of malt sweetened citrus and tangy spicy hops. These notes grow into only a modest yet pleasing level of hoppy bitterness. The hop flavor holds right into the finish as moderate bitterness swells from time to time. Solid IPA here with loads of pleasing hop flavor punch. This is just what I was in the mood for. Oh? This is a IIPA. That explains why I liked it as an IPA.

Bottle: Light amber in color; perfectly translucent. Small beige head. Mild aroma is sweet with citrus and florals. Tastes really damn good! A stout maltiness with plenty of citrus sweetness and a little floral. A bit of pine... a bit of who gives a flying f**k! Absolutely an above average DIPA that I’d rather sit back and enjoy then look any further. Well done Flathead Lake!
