Give me liberty, or give me death! Our tribute to Patrick Henry, who not only left his mark on Virginia history, but was also one of our most beloved Founding Fathers. Henry led the opposition to the Stamp Act, but he was also central to arguing in a Virginia court against the King’s right to veto colonial laws. The Crown’s veto was nullified in his efforts and his argument was the first notch in a young Patrick Henry’s career. Cheers to the break from the Crown, Patty! Hope you enjoy our English Brown Ale as a tribute!

This Northern English Brown Ale is filled with a variety of English malts giving it great caramel, nutty, toffee flavors with a touch of chocolate and even espresso. The English Hops offer the perfect balance to the complex malt sweetness, providing an earthy/grassy hop finish.

Gold medal winner at 2015 Virginia Brewers Cup.

12 oz can from DC. Thanks Ashley! Pours a crystal clear cola color with a gigantic khaki head and annoyingly great retention. Fair lacing. Nutty aroma. Caramel malt and nut flavor. More caramel than nuts. Over-carbonated foamy mouthfeel. Slightly sweet, not bitter. A middle of the road brown ale. I liked it more as I drank it.

Fairly clear deep brown coloured body with a thinnish, single centimetre tall off-white head. Aroma of toasted malt, nuts, earth, caramelised sugars, toffee and way more nuts with pecans and walnuts especially hitting hard. Light to Medium-bodied; Strong robust nutty and malty flavours dominate with a lot of toasted grain, peated malt and some bitterness remaining, with a little dose of yeast and pungency from remaining alcohol and even a little hop bitterness shows through. Aftertaste shows the toasted grain and nuts, but the caramelised sugar and even some caster sugar elements are fairly strong as well, with a nice balance and surprisingly good complexity and depth of flavours, especially for the style. Overall, a very nice and intricate brown ale with a lot of toasted grain, nut and bitter qualities, but a surprising amount of complex sugars and especially hops make this surprising in a good way. I sampled this twelve ounce can, purchased from Whole Foods in Pentagon City (Arlington), Virginia on 14-December-2019 for US$2,25 sampled at my house here in Washington, just a few blocks away.

Sample at GABF 10/03/2014, thanks to my sis for assistance with note-taking. Pours brown with a medium beige head that dissipates steadily. Stringy lacing. Aroma of malt and roasted nuts. Light-bodied with flavors of roast malt, almond and hops. The finish is sweet with a malty aftertaste. Decent overall.
