Roots is a modern mild shaped by heritage + restraint. Built on heritage barley, dark + gently roasted malts bring flavours of toasted grain, soft cocoa + subtle nut, with a light touch of dried fruit. Low in strength but rich in character, it’s a beer that rewards slower drinking; reflective, grounding, + deeper than it first appears.

Can. Clear deep amber brown beer, good bubbly pale tan head. Light palate, airy, a little dry, decent fine minerally carbonation. Fairly dry thin bodied dark malts, some tangy chocolate. Not getting much Chevalier richness. Thin ripe plummy fruits. Light and semi dry finish. Not bad, for me, certainly the basis of a good mild here but, I think needs to be a bit beefier in most departments. Milds don't have to near low alcohol beers.

Cask at the Nag's Head, Reading. Dark brown with a frothy beige head. Good flavours here given the low ABV - datk chocolate, a gentle earthiness, brazil nuts, fruit cake and a light roastiness. However, it's definitely on the thin and watery side. Being a bit of a lightweight I'm always keen to support low ABV brews - but even so I have to admit that this one could do with an extra 1% ABV to bulk out the mouthfeel a bit. Nevertheless it's still a tasty and enjoyable mild.
