Berliner Weisse

Troublesome's meaner cousin will flail your tongue as hard as he can, but being such a little guy, you'll probably just pucker a bit. Spawned through an overnight kettle souring with our house lactobacillus culture, the wort emerges furious at what we did to it. Then, just because, we pitch a saison yeast and allow it to free rise to it's further distain. It comes out angrier than... uh, angrier than... well, something really angry. But at 3.8% ABV there's no reason for you to be too afraid.

Malts: Pils, Wheat, Flaked Wheat
Hops: A little
Secret Ingredients: Lactobacillus, Napoleon complex

Bottle - Soft wheat notes and a soapy tartness. Clear light gold with a frothy huge head. Soured wheat up front, little acidity and a nice citrus clean finish. Not bad.

Sampled from the tap at GTMW 2015. Pours a near clear pale yellow with a white head that lasts throughout the beer. Aroma has lots of earthy wheat with musty grain and a hint of light tart fruit. Flavor is more light tart fruit forward with a bit of earthy wheat that grows and a light mustiness.

Slightly hazy golden and copper coloured body with a nice, three centimetre tall pure white head that fades relatively fast. Aroma of sour grapes, cherries, yeast, bread, lemons and even some brett. Light-bodied; Strong sour note with a good lactose and milky sweetness. A touch of the bread and lemons come through with a good yeast flavour and a smooth and silky finish that’s very refreshing. Aftertaste is on the malty side with some sour and even salty (think gose) flavours noticeable. Overall, a very good berliner weisse that you would think would come from Berlin, if it had the syrups alongside. Great to sample and a nice beer to get acquainted with the style with. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased yesterday from Whole Foods (Bowery) in New York, New York on 18-June-2015 for US$2,99 sampled a day later in my hotel room here on the LES of New York on 19-June-2015.

This beer pours a clear pale yellow-gold color with a medium white head that evaporates steadily to an outer ring. Short strings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of citrus, wheat and spice. Light-bodied with a lemony character and notes of herbal wheat in the background. The finish is mildly tart and dry with a lingering citrusy aftertaste. Above average overall.

Tap at Capitol Beer in Sacramento, CA. Pours gold with a white head. Aroma is lightly sour. Med minus body. Flavor starts a bit sweet, goes sour (seems citrus), gets to sweat sox - all quite rapidly. Very nice. Close your eyes, it’s Berlin.

This is a pretty solid Berliner with a nice tart citrus flavor, somewhat sour, and pretty tasty overall. Limited notes on this one.
