Downward Spiral is an imperial version of our Hopside Down India-style Pale Lager that was aged on new oak spirals. This bold wood-aged beer is an aggressively hopped, cold-fermented brew that brings together the clean, crisp finish of a lager with the hop character of an IPA, balanced by distinct oak flavors and aromas. Wood is good. Prost!

Bottle. Wood, hay, orange malt and quinine aroma. Hazy golden yellow with moderate head. Sweet orange caramel malt and moderately bitter pine/orange peel flavor. Not bad.

Tap at Mason Lounge. Filtered looking orange-tan. White, off-white head. This is my kind of beer. Expertly lagered, but also has the massive orange citrus bite on top of the tasty golden malt. The oak adds another layer of depth, really making this a solid beer. Cool, piny, refreshing mouthfeel. Good stuff.

Bomber bought at Safeway in CDA, ID. Aroma is doughy, grapefruit, a little caramel; light oak comes out after it warms a little. Pours hazy cantaloupe with a one finger white head that falls fairly quickly into a skiff of foam. Taste is bittersweet with a lingering bitter finish; nice citrusy flavor. Like the aroma, the oak opens up a little after warming in the glass. Tastes good to me.

Bomber from Albertsons. Pours a clear golden color with a medium white head. A big oaky and Pils malt nose. Quite light aroma. The flavor though is quite strong; huge bitter oak, loads of tannins, fresh fruity hops, light sweet malty base. Bitterness throughout. Quite drinkable. The’ re-discovery’ of lager with big hoppy and barrel flavors is pretty awesome I think. Oh and, the Downward Spiral is an epic album. It’s such a story from rage to final desolation. I can’t imagine it being better.

On tap at Prefunk, Boise, ID Hazy golden orange witha full lasting white head. Fresh hop aroma. Light malts and big fresh hops though low IBUs strange additional flavor that must have been the wood but if I dodn’t know before hand would not have placed it. Interesting

Bottle. Pours light orange with thick white head. Aroma is sweet citrus and honey like a pale ale. Flavour is full, hop and oakiness, like an aged IPA. Finish is like a strong lager, with a bit of alcohol.
