We teamed up with our buddies from Indiana-based Sun King Brewery for a CANlaboration project to unite the brewer’s friendship and passion for pushing the boundaries of craft beer in a can. Brewers from Oskar Blues and Sun King made the trek to each others breweries for months, and are excited to bring you CHAKA, a limited-release Belgian-style ale — the first craft beer to be packaged in the Alumi-Tek® re-sealable pint bottle from Ball Corporation. CHAKA will be released May 3rd 2012 at the Craft Brewers Conference in San Diego in each attendee’s hotel room and at special events throughout the weekend (see below!). The following week the brewers will make limited quantities available at the Oskar Blues Tasty Weasel Taproom and in Sun King’s home market.

Keg at Brewdog Aberdeen. Pours clear amber-brown, thin off-white head. Aromas of toffee, dried fruit and light biscuit. Taste has more toffee sweetness and just a light zing of Belgian yeast. Medium body, sweet finish. Nice.

Keg at BD in der Don, 21/06/14. Chestnut brown with a good sized light beige covering that retains well. Nose is dark fruit rind, spice, dates, fruit loaf, stoned fruits. Taste comprises fruit loaf, Belgian yeast esters, spice, herbal pangs, dark berry fruit, earthy rinse. Medium + body ,fine carbonation, light booze in the close but fairly well integrated at 8%. Ok Belgian.

Keg at brewdog Aberdeen. Atoms is candied berries, Belgian yeast and honey malt. Some plasticy phenols. Nice rich red amber coloured pour with halo of off white head. Flavour is sweet caramel honey malts, slightly meaty Belgian yeast and herbal hops. Palate is semi sweet fullish bodied with lowush carbonation. Earthy spicy hop in the finish. Tasty enough but a bit too sweet.

Keg @ Brewdog Brum. Pours rusty orange with a smoky frambozen aroma, lovely yeasty juicy fruit taste, if a little tempered and not as vibrant as its Belgian counterparts.. syrupy with slight alcohol whisps. Enjoyable.

Keg at BrewDog Birmingham; dark burnished amber pour with a creamy magnolia head, yeast aroma, taste has subtle Belgian yeast along with caramel, brown sugar, some TCP but overall it’s ok, not world class but league 1.

Keg at BD Sheps B. It pours dark amber/brown with a medium beige head. The nose is sweet...fruit cake, bruised banana, dried fruits and light spice. The taste is bitter-sweet, candy, caramel, fruit cake, brown sugar, light alcohol, banana bread and spice. Medium body and average carbonation. A fairly standard sweet, Belgian strong affair. Not overly memorable for me...
