American Primitive Beer. The Invisible City of Bladensburg our historic ship’s beer, is brewed in commemoration of the War of 1812. Freshly cropped spruce tips were added to the kettle (to prevent scurvy of course) and the beer was open fermented with brettanomyces and lactobacillus just like the good ole’ days.

From tap. Pours cloudy to hazy orange with a small white head. Aroma is citrusy, crisp hoppy and slight sourish. Crisp fruity. Lingering light milky finish.

5 month aged version at the brewpub pours a hazy straw gold with some lacing white head. Nose has lemon rind, heavy herbs, brett B, some mild spruce notes. Flavor is very limey, quite a bit of green spruce notes, lemon, straw, green bell pepper. Dry, herbal finish.

Draft at the source. Hazy pale yellow color, huge white head with good retention and solid lacing. Aroma is lightly funky, herbal, floral. Taste has sour lemon, pink grapefruit, herbs. Easy drinking. 9-4-8-3-16 4.0. Second tasting, keg aged 5 months. Hazy straw color, beautiful ice cream cone head. Aroma is dominated by funk, dusty attics, cobweb covered lemons. Taste has more deeply sour grapefruit, lemon, peppery pineapple, spruce, dry finish. The brett has worked its magic. I’m amazed that this is 3%. You don’t need a hi abv to brew a complex and tasty beer.

Not quite as good as some of the other beers I’ve had tonight. This one is still decent though, with a big dose of lactobacillus and some light bretta. Pours blonde with good head and lacing. Finishes with light to medium sourness. Spruce tips are well integrated, and some grassy or hay notes. Tap at brewpub.
