Bock beers are represented by a male goat, which in German lore symbolizes strength and virility. In accordance with the Reinheitsgebot (German Purity Law of 1516), bock beers must have a pre-fermentation malt sugar concentration of 16%, which converts over to at least 7% alcohol after fermentation. These strong beers were made popular in the early 1600’s by monks in order to minimize their hunger during fasting periods. While most bocks are dark, Blonde Bock is golden-colored and malty with a rich, creamy head. The rich flavor is counterbalanced with just the right level of bitterness from the Hallertau aroma hops and create a very smooth profile.

Draft at San Jose airport. Husky grainy aroma. Faint floral. Clear dark gold with head that quickly dissipated to a collar and dusting, but there is nice patterning down the sides. Tate is moderately astringent with moderate high bittering. Slight alcohol warmth is nice. Really a bit rough and lacking rich maltiness that this style demands.

On tap at Oakland airport. Light copper body, minimal head. Sweet malt aroma, taste follows with more sweet malt, honey. Body is fantastic, slick, slippery. Shame they serve it ice cold.

[2/20/15] Draught at Gordon Biersch Mission Valley in San Diego. Clear golden. Aroma of malt, slightly grainy, with honey-ish hint. Sweetish flavor with malt, bready, a bit caramelly, a bit honey-ish, with a slightly drier finish with a bitterish hint and a faint alcoholic note. Light to medium-bodied.

Draft sample @Syracuse location. Clear yellow color some head and lace. Nose and flavor is the same. Decent balance of hops and malt. It’s true to the style just a tad boring. Maybe upping the hops would help kick this up a notch. Body is thin and watery. Meh

Bottle. Pours a orange copper with a small frothy white head that diminishes quickly to nothing. The aroma is a fruity malt with clove and citrus. Medium mouthfeel with a dry malt with caramel and mollasses. Easy to drink a good bock from GB.
