It’s been a dozen years since we’ve brewed a lager—and, true to form, we’re going big with Dissenter India Pale Lager, our argument in favor of the potential for complex lagers. Brewed with a wide variety of tropical, citrus-forward hops, Dissenter clocks in at 8.7% ABV and 70 IBUs. Our ales are fermented at warm temperatures, but this lager is fermented cold, using a different kind of yeast. The longer brewing process used for lagers gives Dissenter an exceptionally clean finish, allowing you to appreciate the clear beauty of the hops as you would a well thought out, eloquent dissenting opinion. We’ll let this one speak for itself.

Sampled on draft at Hou Thou this beer poured a golden amber color with a medium sized creamy yellow-white head that left good lacing. The aroma was tangy and sweet sugar, caramel, pine, grapefruit, perfume, catbox and tropical fruits. The flavor was tangy and bitter with bread, sugar, pine, tropical fruits, grapefruit and a bit of catbox. Long finish. Thick body. Interesting.

750 ml bottle. Bright yellow gold color. Small foamy white head. Fragrant citrus hop aroma. Soft bittersweet toasted malt flavor is balanced nicely by the big citrusy hops. For such a big beer this very smooth and drinkable. Slightly bready but lot’s of complex hops. Finish brings notes of vanilla and caramel, then bitter and dry. Well done.

750 ml bottle into lager glass; no bottle dating, but was just released. Pours crystal clear pale golden color with a 1 finger dense white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass. Aromas of big tangerine, grapefruit, pineapple, lemon zest, apricot, floral, grass, pine, cracker, bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great complexity of bright citrus/tropical/pine hops and moderate pale malt balance; with great strength. Taste of big tangerine, grapefruit, pineapple, lemon zest, apricot, floral, grass, pine, cracker, bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Good amount of earthy pine/grassy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of tangerine, grapefruit, pineapple, lemon zest, apricot, pine, cracker, bread, and floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice complexity of bright citrus/tropical/pine hops and moderate pale malt sweetness; with a nice malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, crisp, and moderately sticky mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is an excellent IPL. All around great complexity and balance of citrus/tropical/pine hops and moderate pale malt sweetness; and very smooth and crisp to drink for the ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

Pours gold into a snifter. Bright white head with medium retention recedes leaving spider lacing. Sweet caramel and tropical fruit aromas. Well balanced with caramel and resin upfront turning dry and slick in the lasting bitter earth, sweet grass and pith finish.

On tap at Rare Bird in Traverse City. Pours golden with a white head. Lots of pine hoppiness in the aroma and some citrus hoppiness. Flavors of pine, grapefruit, pine resin hoppiness. I wrote "very hops" in my notebook.

Crystal clear golden coloured body with a large, three centimetre tall white head makes for a nice look to the style. Aroma of very fresh hops, alcohol, light metal, but more pine and grapefruit notes make this very nice. Medium-bodied; Tastes of pine, flowers, resin, grapefruit and especially herbs show the hop profiles throughout, but the last, grassy and very herbal note make this one stand out for quite a while in the palate. Aftertaste shows a great blend of malt and hops with more of an emphasis on the hops, but a flavour-packed and still complex beer, especially for the style. Overall, definitely worth finding if you can grab it somewhere, but otherwise, a hop-forward lager makes for a nice beer, but nowhere near the depth or complexity of most ales. I sampled this 75 cL bottle purchased the day before at Whole Foods in Vienna, Virginia on my fifth wedding anniversary on 09-August-2014 for US$12,99 sampled at home in Washington on 10-August-2014.
