This traditional German Roggenbier has strong notes of toasted bread and spice with hints of banana and caramel on the nose. On your first sip, spicy clove and banana dominate, but are then soothed with a bready malt sweetness.

Mild treacle and biscuit nose. Clear tea, medium yellow head. Dry, bread crust, subtle banana notes. Flavor falls a little flat. To be fair, I rated this when I had a cold. However, in my frustrated attempts to find any kind of flavor or aroma, I stumbled on a quick to sharpen my sense of taste and smell. I ate a mix of a little horseradish and mustard which temporarily restored my senses, long enough to evaluate the beer. The beer was still relatively weak.

Keg at the Rake, 25/03/14. Lightly hazed golden amber with a good sized light beige head that retains well. Nose is sweet, perfumed tones, grain, rye bread, light smoke, toffee. Taste comprises hints of Turkish delight, rye bread, candied sugars, sweet licks. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, sweetish close. Ok stuff if a little sweet in places.

Draft at Cambridge Blue, Cambridge on 22 November 2013. Poured a cloudy dark brown colour with a scummy beige head. Aroma of caramel, malt and orange peal. Spicy flavours with nutmeg, Christmas cake and citrus zest. Finish included hints of ginger, pineapple and chewy grain. A lot going on, but I wasn’t entirely sure that it all gelled together...

Rake. Keg. Hazy deep amber beer with a good pale cream coloured head. Palate is soft and smooth with fine prickly carbonation. Sweetish malts, whisper of nuts. Light sweet bubblegum ester. A little coca cola and generic sweet fruits. Smooth finish. Estery aftertaste. Not bad.
