Christmas tasting at the Kernel. Opaque black beer, thick tan head. Light soft palate, semi dry. Smooth dark malts, not roasty or bitter. Some well balanced dark fruits. A little aniseed alcohol before the dark malt turns tangy. Smooth finish. Not a hugely complex Impy Stout but this one charms with the richness and smoothness of it’s delivery. Nice!

Bottle at The Kernel Christmas Tasting 2011. Big thanks to Kenneth for this one. Pours muddy black with a hugely dense, rich beige head. Looks gorgeous. Sweet, dark malt aroma, with perhaps some coconut and mild roast. Medium to big sweet flavor, notes of dark malts, mild roast, cocoa, some wood, charred wood. Medium to full bodied with average to heavy carbonation. Lightly warm finish with a mild carbonation tang, ashy and chalky malts, some cocoa, moderate lingering roast, some burnt sugar. Pretty solid and nicely balanced big beer.
