Jopen Barmhartige Samaritaan – American Barley Wine, 11,5% – 33cl

2017 bottle edition, opening and enjoying a lot, on saturday, after the pizza, relax with a generous and solid barley wine. This one is really smooth and syrupy, generous sweetness, toffee, vanilla, bitterness was not that strong.

Bottle from Biernavigatie. Malty and hoppy aroma of sweet caramel malts, toffee, fruity hops, sweet dried fruits, soft touch of spiciness, a little warming alcohol, and mild candied notes. Flavour is sweet, bit sticky, with a very decent hoppy bitterness in the bittersweet finish. Body is above medium, slightly boozy. Nice US hopped bittersweet Barley Wine, delivers as promised.

33 cl. bottle @ home, bought @ Edrinks, Eindhoven. Clear dark brown with an off-white head. Hoppy aroma and loads of caramel, raisins and some licorice. Sweet taste with a sweet boozy finish. Reminds me a bit of the Ongelovige Thomas which has a similar caramel and hops combo in my opinion. Great beer.

Bottle from Dranken Geers, Oostakker. Pours hazy dark brown with a lasting, thick, frothy, off-white head. Aroma of orange peel, red apple, dates, brioche, caramel, almond, pink grapefruit, pear. Taste is medium malty sweet, caramelly & biscuity with fruity notes of apple, pear, fig, dates, bitter hoppy middle of grapefruit & orange peel, a bit herbal with a sourish undercurrent. Dryish, herbal, almost a tad piney hoppy finish, lingering biscuit, bitter fruit rinds & warming liqueur alcohol. Medium body, creamy texture, soft carbonation. Very nice, almost Black IPA-ish at times, but Barley Wine character prevails.

10E17. Bittersweet, with a good dose of hops. Not the freshest, so some of the aromas will have lessened. Not like most barleywines, more bitter, but still not something I go out of my way for. Very thin. Not bad, not great.
