Fles @ hotel in Mons/Bergen. Donkergeel bier mets chuim. Smaak is licht bitter hoppig, licht zoet en ietwat kruidig. Drinkt erg makkelijk weg, had niet de indruk dat deze 9% was. Goed bier om rustig van te genieten.

Taste: pretty sweet, fruity, sugary, some almonds, banana peel. Aftertaste: spicy, yeast, soft bitterness, some fruity notes.

Wallonian tripel I haven’t seen before, bottle from Fontana in Sint-Niklaas. Some slow gushing but easily manageable. Thick and frothy, regularly shaped, egg-white, dense head, remaining completely closed for a long time (quite remarkable for a beer this strength which does not seem to use any head stabilizer); hazy golden blonde colour with vaguely greenish hue and a suspension of pale yeast bits throughout, cluttering together in the end, thus creating a more equally cloudy appearance and ochre-ish hue. Stereotypically Belgian tripel aroma of cooked potato, banana (isoamylacetate, clearly), rain puddle, sugared pineapple, gooseberry, stewed rhubarb, white bread, freshly cut grass, dried camomile, waffle batter, dry earth, unripe plum, old cloves, green apple (acetaldehyde), sourdough, old cloth, young ’jenever’ and - after adding the sediment - a whiff of old urine. Crisp, lively onset, lots of fruity esters but in a more or less orderly manner, lots of gooseberry and green apple or unripe pear, some banana but not exagerrated, raw pineapple, in all more sour than sweet, with a fizzy overcarbonation accentuating this sourishness; this fruitiness, especially the green apple acetaldehyde, stretches over a malt sweetish middle, ’meagerly’ bready and somewhat grainy on its edges, with fluffy, full mouthfeel and a minerally accent here and there. Finish is bready due to yeast and lingering maltiness, adding a grassy, earthy hop bitterness which is actually matched quite well against the sweetness - in comparison with many other tripels at least - as well as a warming, ’jenever’-like alcohol effect and flavor, flirting with astringency but still managing to behave decently, as it ought to be in this particular style. Retronasal phenols abound along with floral notes of the hops. Phenolic and alcoholic for sure, but not more so than any decent Belgian tripel so at least technically alright; there are a few ’dirty’ aspects to the nose, but the actual flavor is acceptable, yet totally typical for the style. Very old school indeed, I don’t see why new tripels have to be added to an already vast sea of them all the time, but by itself, this passes for me, primarily because it feels ’genuine’ and natural, and refrains from the overt sweetness seen in many tripels made by larger breweries than this one.

Bottle @ home. Clear yellow color, full sized white head. Aroma is malts, lightly yeast, a hint of hay and it even has a whiff of a weizen. Taste wheat, lightly malts, again somwehat yeasty although it’s not bothering me much, it actually suits the flavor somehow. Bopdy is decent, texture is kind of smooth, lightly oily, carbonation is soft to average which suits the beer. In the end it’s actually quite nice, better than the aroma suggested.

F: not very big, white, average retention. C: light hazy, gold. A: malt, floral, grassy bitterness, bread, yeast, hint of citrus. T: malt, white sugar, light grassy/floral bitterness, hint of citrus peels, spicy, orange, yeast, fruity, medium body, lively carbonation, good balanced beer, quite refreshing for this 9% ABV, 0,33l bottle from Delhaize in Eupen.
