Draught at Local Option on 4/18/14
Pours a fairly deep amber with some cherry hues. Light beige head is small and fleeting. Clarity is medium.
Very bizarre nose of spices (saffron, vanilla, and a not quite cinnamon-like note) mix with a waxy, almost crayon-like element that will be revisited in the flavor. Fortunately, some tartness and sweetness, mixing to give it a bittersweet, if not quite acetic-like quality, help broaden things and I’m left with at least something to ponder. Some dry, toffee-like notes emerge with warming as do some stronger, drying alcohol notes and peppery esters. Dosent quite come together for me, but it’s not overly off-putting and I’m happy to dive in and see what’s in store flavor-wise.
Unfortunately, the adjunct sugar used (don’t know this for sure but it tastes like it) has added its trademark powdered sugar/vegetal/waxy note (which I also associate with oxidation, but here I think it’s the adjunct sugar). The rice/sake theme is well-done at least, adding a strong dose of acidity that helps counter the rich caramel-toffee maltiness. Had the carbonation been a bit tighter, I think the sugar biproduct flaws would be a little less forgiveable, but as is, it’s watery, loose and the off notes just sort of stew on the palate. Some light alcohol sharpness on the end.
I like it more for the experimental nature, but the sugary/vegetal notes have to go and they can probably dry it out some more and add some more carbonation. Cool to be introduced to this brewery though. Not sure if I’ve ever had a German beer that wasn’t one of the 10 styles that are never deviated from.
