Moa St Josephs is a classic Belgian Tripel. Strong spice, caramel and banana ester characters create complex flavours and aromas which are heightened by its extended bottle conditioning period. The combination of bittering hops, malt and candy sugars compliment the high alcohol content and integrate into a very approachable and drinkable Tripel.

Bottle @ Dan’s house. Cork shot off like a mother fucker. Hazy, light orange appearance with a white head. White grape, pear, spritzy wheat malty, somewhat spicy aroma. Tangy, bready yeasty, peach/pear, tangy vinous, apple flavor. High carbonation. Ok but pretty weird.

333 C&C from Belmont Station. Pours hazy orange gold with a transient white head. Principal aroma is sharpish light pitted fruit.Med body or better. Flavor is Belgian yeast/spice, but the banana ester is absent. Clove is part of this. Kandi is persistent in a low way. I would swear that apricot is a principal fruit component. Some light earthiness. A little phenol. It’s definitely dry, but the kandi is detectable in the finish. All in all it is a beautiful thing.

Bottle. Dark gold with a large white head that’s never less than a coat in the - as it turns out - appropriate Westmalle glass. Aroma is fruity and doughy, with pears, banana, peach, vanilla, cloves. Taste is moderately sweet with peaches and pears, dough and prominent cloves as well as white pepper and vanilla in the bitter finish. Alcohol is reasonably well-integrated, but sharpness of the spices makes the flavours a little less so. Pretty good, but not my sort of tripel.

750ml bottle - hazy gold - a very lively pour, with a soapy, well-sustained, one finger head - nose is moderate dry herbal character, a bit of honey, a touch of earthy character, mild phenols, alcohol - full carbonation in the mouth, but it is mostly soft - medium dry for the style, with some toasty, dry grains and a slight flinty character on the back end - very understated phenols and esters, perhaps a bit too much so, as their subtlety allows the alcohol to come through far too much - a bit of quinine-like bitterness on the tail end combines with the boozy character to remind me of gin and tonic - it is trying very hard to be elegant, but it falls short, and allows the alcohol to make it taste rough around the edges.

Bottle, about 2 years old. Cloudy gold-orange with a fine, thick head. Standard fresh tripel aroma, nice hops, peppery, with cracker-like malts, citrus, alcohol, peaches, pears. Flavor of burnt sugar, gine, alcoholic zing, huge alcohol at first, plus citrus zest, apricots. Highly attenuated, with a dry finish. A very interesting tripel, with a bit too much alcohol.

To celebrate my 17,100th rating I enter this beer from my fiancée’s home country. A hazy golden beer with an off-white head. The aroma has notes of malt and spices - primarily coriander. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt, spices, and yeast.
