Deepening our bond with Sierra Nevada Brewing Co., forged with the 2009 collaboration Life & Limb, we've brewed an East-meets-West Imperial IPA called Rhizing Bines. “We had a lot of fun brewing the original dark and roasty Life & Limb in Chico with the Grossmans and Sierra Nevada’s extended family,” says Dogfish Head President and Founder Sam Calagione. “We are very proud of the way that beer turned out. Now it’s our turn to repay that hospitality and brew a very hop-centric IPA in Milton with our pals from Chico, incorporating innovative ingredients and techniques from both breweries.” On the hot side, Rhizing Bines went through Dogfish’s signature continual-hopping process with floral and citrusy Bravo hops. On the cold side, it was dry-hopped with an experimental varietal so new it doesn’t yet have a name, just a number: Hop 644. A component of Sierra Nevada’s aroma-boosting Torpedo system made a pit-stop in Delaware for dry-hopping duty before it headed to Sierra’s new North Carolina brewery. To celebrate Sierra Nevada planting East Coast roots, Dogfish Head tracked down a Carolina heirloom wheat grown and milled at Anson Mills. The soft red winter wheat contributes subtle sweet and nutty notes to this hop-forward ale. “It gives my wife and myself great comfort to know that although we’re leaving our home and friends on the West Coast, we’re joining our craft brewing friends on the East Coast,” says Sierra Nevada General Manager Brian Grossman. “Here’s to great beer!” The label for Rhizing Bines depicts the pairings behind this beer: two hop varietals, two yeast strains (Chico and Doggie), two unique hopping processes and two family-owned breweries. These bonds start at the root – or rhizome – and stretch throughout the mature bines. “Sam and his family and the entire Dogfish crew have been friends of ours for a long time,” says Sierra Nevada Founder Ken Grossman. “When we started talking about doing another collaboration we jumped at the chance, especially since this version will be the hoppy counterpoint to the last brews. We couldn’t say no! We’re looking forward to joining forces again.

750ml bottle thanks to Chris pours out a golden copper color topped with a sand head. Nose is nice hops some mix of pine citrus and floral along with a bread malt. Taste is more of the nice hop balance with a mellow malt bill.

750 ml bottle poured into a Spiegelau tulip. Clear orange with a finger of off-white head. Aromas of caramel, honey, aged hops and floral notes, stone fruit, orange citrus. Tastes of citrus, candied fruit, aged hops and floral notes, a little pine and hop oils. Medium body with a dry finish. Didn’t (unintentionally) age as bad as I thought it would.

Bottle from DeLaurenti, Seattle
Hazy golden color, small head. Moderate fruity aroma, light biscuity malts; good body strength, good malt flavor, a soft pale malt, it comes with a pleasant light sweetness, and a good portion of fruity hops. Strong bitterness, but that was expected.
I guess that fresh and from tap this could be great. Appreciated mostly because of its balance.

750ml bottle, thanks Aleksi & Jay
Bottled 01/29/13 - Pours dark orange with a smooth head. Aroma of aged hops, vegetables, caramely malts and mild hints of hops. Taste is sweet, malty and caramely with hints of toffee, aged hops and citrus. Finish is crisp, malty and sweet with loads of caramel, toffee and hints of aged hops. Would probably be pretty good from a fresh bottle, but this one is just way too old.

0.75l bottle shared with Inbreak @ the Ginger Man NYC. A light blurry golden one this and it has a nice medium sized just off-white light bubbly top. Not to extreme on the nose but it get a nice strawberry sweetness with green hops, pine cones, quite fresh on the nose, perhaps a bit cold but fresh. Nice light hoppy flavors. It has a oily mouthfeel and a below average carbonation level. Light fruity, kinda blend in a way. Some white fruit meat with a little bit of something spicy. Tangerines are mentioned and I agree. Not bad in any way, but perhaps a bit mellow? Had hoped or at least expected something a bit more from these two great brewers. 19.06.2013

hazy amber beer, good pale cream coloured head. Smooth palate with fine carbonation. Smooth malt, trace of cream. Light hops - pine with a touch of mint and quite bitter on the finish. Finishes smooth. A touch disjointed but quite drinkable. #644 hops in this one as well as Bravo.

Clear copper body under a tall, long lasting, sticky off-white head. Earthy hop aroma over a sweet malt base. The flavor is not too sweet, not too hoppy with a dry finish. O.K. but nothing special here.
