Draft at The Porter. Murky brown color, bright tan head, solid lacing. Aroma of candied port wine. Taste is vinous brandy, vanilla, boozy plums. Delicious.

Aged in DuPont Calvados barrels. Hazy red brown beer. Small off white head. Malty nose with a trace of apple. Softish semi dry palate. Sweetish malt tempered by a little aniseed. Trace of wood leads to sweet toffee and a little tangy apple. Nicely joined up. Tasty but not shouty.

Brown twist off bottle. Brewed in 2010, Chg. No. 03 Pours a clear brown with a thin off-white ring. Sugary, raisin aroma. The flavor has a large amount of sweetness, some dark fruit, the Calvados is in there too. No hops. A bit different, but could probably use a bit of cellar.

2010-3 Bottle. A Austrian Barrel Aged Barley Wine? That’s unique. Bottle notes that it is aged in E. Dupont Calvados Barrels (good stuff). Pours with a murky brown body and a thing khaki head that fades in about a minute. Some alcohol legs and lace. Aromas of chewy caramel, toffee, burnt sugar, cereal, apple brandy (or calvados): sort of raw, earthy, woody with a strong, vinous, apple character. A bit of a soggy grain smell. Flavors are much more strongly linked to the calvados. Raw apple, brandy wood. More than a bit metallic and medicinal/bandaid; all things that can be found in good calvados, but do not work well with this beer. Big and thick body. Light carbonation. Okay, but not great by any means.

Bottle. Pours a clear deep amber brown with a gray light brown head that quickly dissipates to the edges. Aroma is sweet with sweet grains and a nice underlying apple brandy note. Flavor has a bit of an off note that battles the sweet grains and caramel. The apple brandy come out a bit in the finish.
