While the style is an oxymoron, this ale is an variation of our "Loose Cannon" IPA with an obvious dark note.

Draft @ The Fred Bar, Sandy Spring, GA. Pours a dark amber color with a small off-white head. Has a fruity malty caramel hoppy aroma. Fruity malty hoppy citrus caramel flavor with weak hints of licorice. Has a slightly roasted malty hoppy bitter caramel finish.

Bottle. Pours a predictable dark brown with a thin head. Aromas are heavy with chocolate, roasty malt and earth tones, but little hops appear. Flavor is more of a porter than Black IPA. The pleasant chocolate and earth notes are only supported by a lightly tropical fruit hops presence, which is disappointing. It’s good as a porter, weak as anything labeled \"IPA.\"

Lemon zest, charred oak, and tree bark nose. Clear mahogany, medium tan head. Well balanced blend of rustic woody and citrus notes. Nice mocha finish. Flavorful without being overbearing. Nothing remarkable other than it is a well made enjoyable IDA.

Big black pour wit a choco moose head that runs away. Aroma of your favorite girlfreind when she’s just starting to get a little BO. Big rude initial flavor blast. Over the top and down the side we go. Head over heels. Sharp giant flavor attack. Wew, quite a large flavor blast. Way to much for my girlie taste buds. Oily palate like pine or spruce tar. Burping brownish citrus hops. Big long lingering too much to handle finish. Alky content is apparent. Big roasty hop flavored old burnt damp wood aftertaste.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a matte black color with a medium sized foamy tan head that lingered and produced good lacing. The aroma was strong floral and piney hops - almost gritty and dry. The flavor was dry and very bitter with rather strong floral hops and touches roasty malts and nut. The finish was long with fruity hops coming out and floral hops lingering. Medium body and surprisingly smooth. Solid.

Pours mahogany-tinged black into a shaker. Mocha head with medium retention recedes leaving scant spiders to skim surface. Dark roasted chocolate malt aromas. Thin with front to back charred chocolate. Lasting toasted grapefruit pith finish.

Draft. Deep brown body. Frothy, light beige head, slowly diminishing. The aroma is roasty, almost burnt. Notes of mild coffee, floral hops, resin and pine. Hints of earthiness, leaves and charcoal. The flavor is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly to moderately bitter and lightly acidic. It finishes lightly sweet, moderately bitter and lightly acidic. Medium body, watery texture and livecly carbonation. The problem with this style is the combination of roasted malts and resiny hops leaves flavors of dried plant stems, dried grass and the bottom of an ashtray on the back of the tongue. This beer is less so than others, but it’s still there. I still drank the whole pint.

12 ounce bottle from Beer Run in Charlottesville, VA. Pours a dark but clear chestnut brown color with a medium tan head. Decent head retention and lacing. The aroma is rich chocolate and roast notes with big citrus hops. The taste is bitter citrus hops, chocolate, roast and a bitter finish. Medium bodied. Decent.
