While the style is an oxymoron, this ale is an variation of our "Loose Cannon" IPA with an obvious dark note.

Received in trade from budznsudz, thanks for the opportunity. Pours a solid dark brown with the faintest of garnet highlights when held to light. Smallish off white head rises and falls quickly leaving a moderate amount of lace. Smells of grapefruit and pine with hints of bread and caramel. Taste follows the aroma fairly well but adds a small bit of chocolate and roasted grain. Medium body with a moderate level of carbonation and a sweet slick mouthfeel. Decent beer, quite drinkable if not a little simple.

12oz bottle pours a watery, mostly translucent black with a thin, lacing, off white head. Nose is interesting, lightly herbal, vegetal, some dark chocolate, some toasted grains, Cluster hops, some mint. Flavor is sweet, malty, light lemon, some limes, a little pine, chocolate, toast. Medium bodied, slightly sweet finish. Doesn’t have enough hop. More of a straight porter.

Travilah Beer & Wine, Rockville sixer ($10): Pours black with a beige head. Aroma is roasted malts and hops. Pretty straightforward black IPA, but very well-balanced. Not as hoppy as some black IPAs are, but that is probably a good thing. Very sessionable and too easy to drink for its comparatively high ABV. The normal loose cannon is better in my opinion.

12oz bottle. Poured a near pitch black color with a very tiny dark tan head. Aroma was hoppy, with a solid roasted malt body. Tasty, citrus, touch malty. Enjoyable.

Sample at the impromptu Kuhnhenn tasting on 01/17/2012: The beer is a very dark brown color with a medium tan head that burns away steadily. Partial rings of lacing. The aroma is mildly roasty with notes of malt and hops. Medium body with flavors of roasted malt, floral hops and a bit of pine. The finish is moderately hoppy with a sweet malt aftertaste. Decent overall.

Bottle @ home, courtesy of my brother Justin. Thanks! Black appearance with a creamy, light brown head. Moderately piney, resiny, mild roasty malty aroma. Nice chocolate, roasty malty backbone with a organic, very light citrusy, piney flavor. Solid beer but nothing special.

A deep dark IPA with a thin brown head. In aroma, sweet chocolate malt with light mineral notes and resinous hops, ok. In mouth, sweet chocolate malt with light resinous floral hops, light dank notes, signs of oxidation, a bit thin but overall, drinkable. Bottle is more than 7 years old.

Not a bad beer, just that it tastes like they took their loose cannon ipa and mixed in a porter. No real thought behind it, just that they figured the black ipa was a big seller right now and made the closest thing they could.

Firkin at f.w.sullivans on 01/17/2011. Dark black body with a small creamy tan head. Big roast, chocolate, and floral hop aroma. Big roast and chocolate flavor, some floral hops and a dry bitter finish. Medium full body with moderate carbonation.

12oz bottle pours mahogany with mocha head. The aroma has sticky pine hops along with mild notes of roasted malts and maybe chocolate malts too. The taste has a pleasing yet mild mix of pine and citrus hoppiness along with modest levels of roasted malts followed by sweet maltiness far off in the background. This is smooth and subtle for the style.
