Bottle. Soapy piney hops and roasty malt aroma. Black brown with a moderate to large head. Dark roasty chocolate malt, resinous pine, citrus peel hops, and a little caramel flavor. Medium body and carbonation.

Draft. Pretty much black, beige head. Aroma of bitter cotrus. Taste is dark roasted coffee and toffee. It works.

Pours dark brown/black color with tan head. Roasted malt and citrus aromas. Similar flavors with more roast than citrus. Not as hop forward as most of the black IPA’s I’ve had. Medium body average carbonation.

Unfiltered red hued black. Oily beige head. Punished by a long hot summer in storage, this is no longer the beer it once was. It displays a more pungent, milk stout taste now...no real hop bitterness or depth aside from some sharpness up front. Wow, a real aging failure here..should’ve rated it long ago fairly...oh well...

Bottle in Vineyard Haven, MA. Pours dark brown with a rich, lasting beige foam head. Aroma is sweet, toasty caramel up front with brown sugar and juicy fruits, and an understated roastiness in the back. Alright flavor, medium sweet with faintly tangy citric fruits, modest roasted malts, some metallic zing, restrained burnt grassy bitterness. Medium bodied with very creamy carbonation. More citric zip to finish with light roast, faint earth, and some toasted sugars. OK, but nothing special.

12 oz bottle. Pours black with a very light tan head. Very resinous pine aroma blends with cocoa and light roastiness. Flavor has roasty, slightly smoky malts with pine resin and herbal hops. Pretty straightforward, but I like how it works out.

Draft @ Sunset Grill and Tap. 4/12/2012. Deep brown, borderline black. Moderate retention. Aroma is all citrus and fruity hops. Starts with a strong amount of roasted notes and leads to pine resin and grapefruit and orange peel. Cascade hops without doubt. Long finish with fruity hops and floral hops lingering. Medium body and surprisingly smooth. Good, not great. Still pleasing.

Bottle from Bruisin’ Ales. Pours brown/black with a light tan head. Aroma seems very citrus/resin. Med body, more or less. Flavor is very citrus, resin background, with dark roast malt rather than caramel. Then it develops some fruit - swear I get peach. It’s astringent, dry and decently bitter. The fruit characteristics give it a place in the upper ranks of oxymoronic ales. :)
