Starr Hill’s Bandstand Barleywine Ale is a full-bodied brew with massive caramel malt notes reminiscent of burnt sugar and toffee. American hops from the Pacific Northwest more than balance the intense malt flavors, while dry-hopping lends a floral aroma. With an alc. by vol. of 10.5%, this beer is perfect for cellaring.

Ok double IPA, not a supreme barley wine though, in any sense of the word. Doens’t have the thick palate. Some citrus, some malt, but very one dimensional and not melded well. Last beer at DC Summerfest.

Dark brown coloured body with a very thin tan head. Aroma of pit fruits, raisins, malt, earth, toffee and a bunch of alcohol. Medium-bodied; Decent complex flavour of malt, oak, vanilla and some pit fruits, but lacking a bit on depth and sweetness. Aftertaste shows a good malt vibe with some yeast notes, a hint of oak and dryness, but a lack in sweetness, alcohol and complexity on the finish, make for a decent barley wine at best. Overall, a beer that was decent, but not up to the expectations or potentials that it could be given the style and the brewery. Definitely passable if there are other options for you. I sampled this 75 cL bottle purchased from Crystal City Wine Shop in Arlington, Virginia on 05-February-2013 for US$9.99 sampled at home in Washington on 02-March-2013.

Sampled at the 2nd annual Virginia Beer Festival at Capital Ale House Midlothian. Pours a reddish amber color with a thin head. Aroma is fruity and floral hop notes with light caramel. Taste is citrus and vegetal hops with toffee and something a bit salty. Thin bodied. Very dissappointing.
