Bottled. Murky reddish brown colour with a small off-white head. Aroma is alcohol, some sweetish malts, ripe fruits and mine mineral/metallic notes to it. Flavour is mild alcohol, some cardboard, a bit metallic as well as some sweet malts and mild ripe fruits.

(bottle) clear bright amber colour with a small tan head; aroma of dried and stewed fruit; balanced flavour with long light bitter finish; much more of a doppelbock than a barleywine

Bottle. Pours muddy brown with off white head. Nose/taste of minerals, ;paper, caramel, candied fruit and malt. Taste is heavy on paper and minerals with a caramel malt body. Lighter bodied.

Pour is a murky brown with a small tan head. Aroma is a dark fruit and dark sugar. Flavor is the same lots of plum and dark candi sugar. Finish leaves some smoke and tobacco on the tounge. Not a hop bomb American barley wine but a decent English style barley wine.

Bottle from Wine & Cheese in Clayton, MO. Pours very dark ruddy amber with a creamy/foamy beige head. Aroma of sweet malt. Maybe a bit of treacle. Not thick. Flavor is malt and heat and hop. It’s not at all syrupy, and it’s not all that sweet. The primary flavor impact seems to be oak, but there’s no indication this is oak aged, though there’s a lot of barrels on the label. Ok beer.

2009 bottle: Dates and walnuts on the nose. Cloudy ochre, but transparent, thin yellow head, good lacing. Sweet but not cloying, medium body, not syrupy. Quite fizzy. Little intensity, starts with dates and ends with overripe whole oranges. There is a nice confluence of both date and orange at midpalate, which perhaps cherries. Alcohol is imperceptible. All in all, not a bad beer, but a rather weak barleywine, too mellow. It just doesn’t seem to have the spine for cellaring. Drink it fresh for best results.

11.2 ounce bottle from Elwood Thompson’s in Richmond, VA, opened 9/28/10. Pours a dark ruby color with a thin tan frothy head. Decent head retention and lacing. Aroma of toffeeish malts, toastiness, berry notes, and a faint and odd earthy kinda gritty note. The taste is toasted malts, leafy bitter hops, berry-like fruits. Medium bodied. Not as bad as a lot of people are saying, but not really that good either.

Bottle. Poured a clear deep amber with a white head that laced nicely and dissipated slowly. Aroma was a combination of grass and pine with some sweet grain and a hint of alcohol. Alcohol more present on the tongue with a bit of a clash between pine and sweet grains.
