As days get shorter and sleeves get longer, Baxter Brewing releases its fall seasonal, Hayride Autumn Ale. A generous portion of two rye malts give the beer a full body, bready flavor, and subtle spiciness; while toasted malts provide a touch of sweetness and a rich, almost reddish hue. New Zealand Pacifica and Pacific Jade hops balance Hayride’s maltiness and suggest notes of oranges and tropical fruit. Finally, we cold-condition the beer on oak, with light additions of ginger, black pepper, and orange peel, bringing out the spiciness of the rye and rounding out the soft sweetness of the beer. Hayride will give a touch of warmth for those cool fall nights, while remaining deliciously drinkable.
Try pairing this autumn brew with stews, beef roasts, pork chops, stuffed squash, carrot cake, and, of course, pumpkin pie!

Can pour from The City, Seabrook NH. Appearance is cloudy (fine white particulates), dark orange-brown with minimal sparkle, finger-width sudsy beige head with fair retention and trace lacing. Aroma is rye, fruit, caramel. Taste is rye spice, caramel. Palate is medium bodied with thin, frothy texture, soft to average carbonation and finish as taste. Overall, a bit old so it likely lost its hop character but a nice fall offering.

Pours a hazy brown from a can. Aroma is a mix of caramel, brown bread and orange. Flavor is primarily the spicy rye with a touch of orange and caramel. Thin. Good beer.

Can, unsure of date, assumedly fairly fresh, drunk 1/13/16.
Highly clear, light amber to golden body is topped by a medium-sized white head that quickly fades to a ring.
Light herbal/grassy hops with a touch of juju fruit-like character, some rye spiciness and a touch of iced tea character. I think I smell the ginger, which does actually lift the aroma up somewhat, as the hops are not present in very high quantity. Yet nor is there anything wrong with what’s here (don’t get any oak, and the spices are not overdone at all). No alcohol or flaws.
Very straightforward in the flavor, moderately sweet, with various spice notes from rye, hop, pepper, ginger, etc...A touch of light butteriness from the oak, with herbal and grassy hop notes on the end and low bitterness overall. Quite homogenous, actually. Having not read the deScription, I didn’t realize there were any adjuncts in here at all. Carbonation is moderate with no alcohol noted.

Tap at stags head. Fine Amber pour sudsy head. Nose is peppery and malt. Tastes of pepper, malty, caramel, woody, hint of orange peel some rue spice. I get no ginger which I’m thankful for. Dry finish hits backlog throat with some stickiness. Refreshing autumn brew.

Can from Bert’s Fairly clear reddish amber color with a frothy off white head. Peppery spicy bready aromas with hints of brown sugar. Lots more malt in the flavor; big caramel and brown sugar with hints of chocolate. Peppery spicy pine cuts through the sweetness quite well. Lingering light ginger and drying wood tannin long after each sip. Its a bit different, and beats the hell out of any pumpkin based autumn ale.

Can at the cabin in NH. Pours murky, red-brown with suspended yeast floaties and a frothy, white head. The nose has rich brown bread, light nutmeg, some ripe orange. Light to medium sweet flavor with grainy brown bread, nutmeg, other spices, cinnamon, mild earthy bitterness. Medium bodied with fine, massaging carbonation. Moderately sweet to finish with candied fruits, orange, dirt, grains, light alcohol. OK.

Reviewed from notes.
The appearance has a dark red/brown colored body and leaves a three finger white foamy head that must last at least two and a half minutes. The body is too dark for any carbonation to be seen rising. There is some nice minimal spider web lacing here and there.
The smell has some rye up front with a fair amount of malts combined evenly with the hops.
The taste is basically the same leaving a slight dry aftertaste.
The palate has a light to medium body and leaves a great feel on my tongue (nothing harsh, just right).
Overall, this is another great beer by Baxter that I would definitely have again.

0.355l can from my secret Santa 2012. This is a light cloudy deep dark chestnut-red one with a nice almost creamy looking medium sized top. On the nose it's both spicy with caramelized pickled ginger, sweet caramel, and hoppy with a nice dark fruitiness. It smells almost a bit Christmassy, and definitely interesting. It's somewhat average on the carbonation and it has a soft oily mouthfeel. More bitter than I would have imagined. Dusty straw, traces of licorice, dark slightly burned bread and a bit medicinal in the finish. Loads of things going on in this little puppy. Bitter, zesty and lingering slightly burned spicy aftertaste. I'm not quite sure, but I think I'm starting to enjoying this. 23.12.2012
