Granny smith apple nose, not strong. Hazy amber, medium yellow head, nice lacing. Plastic, fusel acohol flavor overripe lemon and apple flavor. Lasting grainy and grassy finish. Light body. I’ve certainly had better DIPAs, but I’ve had worse ones too, and none of them cost me less than this one.

Bottle from Trader Joe’s, Bellingham, WA, as Boatswain Double IPA, 8% ABV
Hazy amber color, medium sized head. Light aroma of cereals. Some malt and caramel flavor, correct body strength, minimal residual sweetness, some vegetables, quite strong bitterness.
Not much quality traits here.

Bottle. Two bucks. Cant pass up the tick at that price. Loads of caramel malt and some sweet, citrus hops. Not very good.

Pours a slightly hazy medium golden color with a decent sized white head with moderate retention. The aroma is quite malty for a double IPA, toffee and caramel with a bit of earthy spicy hops. Wow yeah the flavor holds the same lack of hops that the aroma did. Sweet toffee and sugary malt with a bit of earth and spice and nothing really nice. Medi8um body with a moderate level of carbonation and a sweet slick mouthfeel. Honestly where are the hops? Not a bad beer, just bland and too sweet for the style.

Pour is a copper with a average white head. Aroma is some syurpy malts but there is an ever so faint whiff of hops. Flavor is heavy malts with some cooked cabbage and lots of alcohol. This was not good. When at TJ’s just stick with the TJ’s named beers and put back the beers they bought, probably b/c they were old, and repackaged with their own label. $1.99

Bomber, Boatswain Label, from Trader Joe’s Charlottesville. Pours a clear amber color with a large frothy off-white head. Good head retention. Aroma of floral, herbal hops and cracker malts. The taste is big caramel malts with citrus and herbal hops. Medium bodied. Overly sweet with not enough bitterness for a DIPA. Meh.

Pours cloudy medium amber with a fleeting white head. Sweet fruity aroma. Sweet almost syrupy, some alcohol. The hops are drowned out by the sweet mess going on here. Trader Joe’s "Boatswain Double IPA.

Location: 22 oz bottle from State Line, 10/24/12,Bottled/Brewed by Rhinelander
Aroma: The nose is a bit yeasty, a good amount of spice, some caramel malts, pale malts, and floral notes
Appearance: It pours a clear orange color with a small fizzy white head and a little bit of lace
Flavor: The taste is somewhat sweet up-front, it turn a little chemically mid-palate and finishes that way
Palate: The body is light-medium, the carbonation is soft, it has a lightly chemical feel, and a lightly dry finish
Overall Impression: I don't know what to make of this one. First off, it didn't really resemble an IIPA in anyway other then color and the fact that it is also (according to the label) an Ale. If you get beyond that, it had both good and bad components, including a nice nose and a decent flavor. if you called it an "Imperial Session Ale" or something equally made-up I'd probably have scored it higher in the overall category (which is the only place I took off for it missing the style).

Not good. Some hops in the aroma. Flavor has metal, specifically iron with a quality of rare beef. Somewhat sweet malt.
