Bottle sample at a tasting at Yoav’s place. Thanks Tom L. As Rhinelander Imperial Jack Double IPA. Clear deep golden. Aroma of stale hops with some cardboard, a bit of fruitiness and alcohol. Flavor of sweet malt, a bit honey-ish, with some overripe fruits, stale hops and some bitterness. Medium-bodied.

Bottle, 22oz. As Boatswain Double IPA. A dense, off-white to light beige head forms over a lightly hazy orange colored body. Some lacings. The aroma has hints of butterscotch and dms, even some cooked vegetables. Caramel, pine cones and citrus peel. Sweet flavor with some toffee and citrus peel. Orange hints and some bitterness. Full body, pleasant and soft carbonation. Toffee tending towards butterscotch, and some bitterness in the finish. In a double IPA, the caramel maltyness shouldn’t win over the hops. In this beer it does, hence a low score. Think I was pretty nice with the score. 130821

Deep Copper, Huge Bubbly Head, Lots Of Lacing. Virtually no Aroma. Sweet Malt, Caramel and almost no sign of Hops. Yet another Minhas product wrong for the style. No surprise. Pass it.

Bomber listed as Boatswain IIPA. Pours a clear copper color with a medium white head. I thought this was local..oops. Anyway, malty, caramel, light fruity hops. Dusty at times...maybe a hint of butter? OK. Drinkable.

pretty unexciting double IPA. good hops, but masked by malts. Seems to fly in face of the way a double should be done.

Bomber from Trader Joe’s Bakersfield. Called Boatswain Twin Screw Steamer Double IPA. Nose is floral, biscuit, and a hint of bubblegum. Clear copper orange with a medium off white head that laces fairly heavily. Flavor is lightly bitter, lightly sweet, and very malty with some caramel predominating. Very drinkable for an 8.5% beer that cost a buck ninety-nine but it doesn’t taste or smell like a DIPA.
