Boss Tom’s Golden Bock is our seasonal offering for late spring. The smooth, soft maltiness of this traditional lager is complemented by a noticeable but restrained hop presence. The beer finishes with a lingering dryness and just a hint of caramel. The word “bock” also means “billy goat,” and images of goats are often used as a symbol of the style.

On tap at McNellies. Pours a clear gold with white head that dissipates to the edges quickly. Aroma has a lot of musty grains with a light wet grass and sweetness. Flavor has musty grain and wheat with a bit of earthy grass.

12oz shorty bottle. Filtered tan-orange body, thin white head. A pretty well done Heller Bock, sweet and malty, with delicate yeast tones. Smooth and sweet, with perfect subtle nuances, this is really a great example of the style. Rich golden malt, pungent authentic yeast undertones, peppery noble hop bite. Right on, nails it.

Moving out of KS rate-a-poolza. 12oz bottle poured into a .25L Corsendonk goblet. Bottled on the 38th day of 2013. Best by 06//13. Donated by somebody at the Lawrence Brewers guild
Pours with a small head and a clear golden body. A vortex of carbonation bubbles from the center. Aroma is pretty damn hoppy for the style. That hoppiness is mixed with a clean lagered biscuit maltiness. Flavor is similarly hoppied past traditional (but not to strong) with a good white biscuit maltiness. Goes down easy with a slight hop bitterness and a soft white bread malts aftertaste.

Single bottle from the Build-a-six rack at Binny’s. Soft, malty smell under the cap. Pours a dark golden color with a thick but bubbly head. A little oxidation during the pour, but it goes quickly. Smell suggests water has been treated to get a certain profile, and it’s a bit of a distraction. Taste is malty, with a certain "brightness" to it. I can catch some Noble hops adding a bit of pepper and spice. Nice enough, but needs some more personality.

Location: 12 oz bottle from Colonial Wine and Spirits, 5/8/12
Aroma: The nose is fairly subtle, with some light grains, pale malts, grass, and a little dough
Appearance: A nice looking pour that's a clear, bright golden color with a thick, lasting white foam atop it
Flavor: The taste is mostly malty, grains, dough, light-medium sweetness, and a light grassy bitterness
Palate: Light bodied (leaning a touch toward medium), with some smoothness, and average carbonation
Overall Impression: Unfortunately, the pour is probably the stand-out portion of beer. The rest of it was fine, but unexciting. Not a great beer, but perhaps a bit underrated.

bottle - Pours clear gold with a small, white head. There’s a caramel rich aroma that’s a bit toasty. The flavor is sweet malt, caramel, and maybe a hint of vague fruit notes. Medium bodied. Fairly good.
