This deep mahogany Euro-style lager has a nice balance of malts and hops, which lend to the full-flavored body and mild aroma. It has a pleasantly malt-fruity palate, with touches of chocolate, and some hoppy bitterness coming through at the end.

@ORD. Medium brown with thin head. The aroma is more buttery than anything else, maybe some light toastiness as well. The taste is mild with caramel, toast and diacetyl. Not much else going on.

12oz bottle from Woodman’s poured into a shaker. Bottle labeled as "Sundown Dark Beer". Pours a medium-dark brown. Almost looks like rootbeer. Small bit of bright white head that disapates slightly faster than average. Aroma is mostly malt. Has an aroma of burnt nuts. Taste is medium sweet and very lightly bitter. Almost tastes like fermenting fruit. Medium bodied with a thick yet slick texture. Soft carbonation and an average length finish. Overall, its not that bad. I’m begining to realize that I’m probably not a Berghoff fan. The last two that I’ve tried have had the same rotting flesh sickly sweet scent built right into the taste there. I won’t buy it again but I will at least finish this pint. The rest of the 6er can go to whatever unlucky sap comes to my house and forgets his own beer.

12 ounce bottle from a sampler from Woodmans West Madison. Pours a clear dark copper color with a fizzy off-white head that fades like its going out of fashion. Aroma of toasted malts, anise, smoky notes. The taste is sweet malts, raisins, faintly bitter hop finish. Thin-medium bodied.

Bottled. Clear brown color, medium frothy off-white head. Aroma of some skunky hop, grain, metallic touch which reminds me of very cheap red wine, bit nutty. Bit sweet chocolate taste, metallic, corn, grain. Bit dry palate, like what walnuts give. Too bad of the metallic notes, otherwise it wouldnt be that bad after all.

Shaker pint at the Berghoff Cafe in Concourse C of Chicago’s O’Hare Airport. Pour is a slightly hazed brown copper with a nice tan 1/2 inch head that falls off really quick. Aroma of chemical sweetness and not too much else. Maybe a whisper of bready malt. This came out pretty cold, and even as it warmed, did not display much character. Taste is cherry chemical sweetness mixed with unpleasant diacetyl and a weird herbal medicinal finish. Caramel notes drift in as it warms, helping some. On balance, not pleasant. Perhaps the dark had been sitting for awhile and is not a top seller here at the far reaches of the airport. Palate is medium to thin bodied, oily in the middle with a longish medicinal sweet finish. I had memories of sort of liking this beer back in the day.

12oz bottle. Filtered caramel amber caramel color with an off white minimal head. Mild yet odd macro-dunkel aroma. The taste is sugary sweet, a touch pungent. Crisp initial mouthfeel fades into a sweet, smooth finish. No real hop character gets through the syrupy malt. This is pretty bad, not unlike a cheap Slavic beer.

Draft at the Berghoff Cafe at O’Hare. Fairly strong caramel aroma. Very dark amber or brown color with no head. Medium body with mild, smooth carbonation. Dark caramel flavor with enough hop to provide balance. The bitter builds in the mouth, and the finish heads towards dry. Nice, surprising amount of bitter in the finish. Definitely not your sticky sweet lager. Good drink in the otherwise beer waste lands of O’Hare.

bottle - Pours dark amber with a one finger head. There’s a light malt aroma with maybe a hint of toffee. The flavor is very sweet with caramel malts clearly dominating. Light and very easy to drink, it’s decent enough, but I’m really not noticing much of the hop finish the description mentions. It’s a sweet session beer and not a bad one, but nothing special.

Dark malt aromas at the fore, but weak, with notes of black tea and metal. Purplish amber color, small head. Under carbonated flattish palate, weak caramel malts, virtually no hops. Better than their red, but barely.
