Winner of the silver medal at the 2008 Great American Beer Festival, this Belgian-style Abbey Dubbel is an exceptionally complex beer with many interwoven flavors. This classic-style Abbey beer features an immense head with a fruity nose and a generous body. Malty in the middle, the beer features a clean, almondy dry finish and a slight alcohol warmth. More like a wine than a beer—it has a lot of the qualities of a fine Burgundy.

Beer writer Michael Jackson has praised the Flying Fish Dubbel as “a wonderful example of the style.”

Malts: Two-Row Pale, Munich, Special B, Chocolate, Demerera Sugar
Hops: Styrian Golding

Bottle sample at a tasting at LiBira Pub in Haifa. Thanks Ariel. Clear reddish brown. Aroma of caramel, some dark fruits, a bit of cardboard hints and a faint hints of smoke. Sweetish malty flavor with caramel, some dark fruits and light oxidized hints. Medium-bodied. Not great.

At a tasting, thanks Ariel, almost no head, clear brown to very deep red colour, aroma of burned sugar, dates, flavour of burned sugar and cardboared. Boring, simple and quite bad.

Smells alright. Smells yeasty with a little clove and some florals. Kind of more like a tripel than a double, at least in initial smell. The beer pours dark amber. Has some astringency at the end. A little too fizzy as well. The palate is light - the carbonation takes away from the taste. If you shook it up a little more, it might drink better.

Received in trade from mdaschaf, thanks for the opportunity! Pours a deep reddish brown color with a smallish off white head that dissipates all to quickly. Smells of brown sugar and sweet fruity malt mostly. Raisins and prunes with a fair amount of caramelized sugars and hints of spicy yeasty esters. Taste is sweet and fruity up front with dark caramelized sugars coming next. Yeasty funk finishes as well a a lingering burnt sugar sweetness. Medium body with a moderate level of carbonation and a sweet slick mouthfeel. Not bad for an American interpretation of a dubbel. I enjoyed this one.

6/10/2011 on tap @ Standard Tap, Philadelphia (2011-536)

Clear purple ruby red beer, small off-white head, unstable, non adhesive. Aroma: some smoke, mocha, sour red fruits, lactobacillus. MF: light carbon, medium body. Taste: some sour red fruits, bit of malts, bitter grapefruit, lots of alcohol. Aftertaste: sour red fruits, rotten fruits, banana. Maybe I'm picky as a Belgian, but this isn't anything like a Belgian Dubbel. Sorry guys.
