Isn’t it how it always works? A few brewers sit around tippling and waxing poetic about what-ifs, wild ideas and untapped dreams when one suddenly proclaims "why not?" So the Conflux series was born, bravely leaping corporate and geographic barriers to jointly explore uncharted beeratory. Cheers, fellow explorers, cheers.

Second in a series, this citrusy, smooth white IPA is a fortuitous meeting of Deschutes’ hop skills and Boulevard’s deft wheat touch. What’s 1,800 miles when a great beer is at stake?

A hazed golden ale with a thin white head. In aroma, grainy biscuit malt, with strong oxidation, treacle, so-so. In mouth, chalky character, light mineral notes, grassy hops, cereal character, oxidized and tired. Bottle at Chuck and April’s Cellar Tasting. Bottle from End of 2011.

Sample at Eurostash III tasting on 01/12/2012: The beer is a hazy golden color with a medium rocky white head that recedes steadily. Stringy lacing on the glass. Aroma of lemons, yeast and mild hops. Medium body with flavors of Belgian yeast, citrus, wheat and hops. The finish is earthy hops and yeast with a lingering sweetness. Above average overall.

Bottle: Pale yellow haze with a modest creamy white head. Aroma indicates dry florals merged with wet citrus fruitiness. Inviting. Sweet citrus fruit and plenty of bitters in the taste. Some hints of tropical fruit. Sort of a lingering, dry, spicey trailer. Different is good!

Bottle shared by some one at Houston October tasting. Pours a hazy pale gold with a white head that dissipates quickly to the edges. Aroma is full of citrus with a bit of flora and a backing grass note. Flavor is a bit sweet with citrus and is joined by flora and bitter citrus.

Bomber pours clear gold with white head. The aroma pushes out a good load of spicy yeast and spicy coriander with herbal and sweet malts notes off in the background. The taste is much the same with big bold yeasty spices and coriander that give very little ground to notes like sweet apple and sweet pears as well as bitter grapefruit and pine hoppiness.

The beer pours a pale yellow-gold with a big frothy white head. Bubbles cling to the walls. It has a very floral hop aroma. It’s all wildflowers, honeysuckle, potpourri and earth. The witbier spicing comes through with some coriander and a good dose of orange peel. Bready wheat spice makes a definite apperance, as well. There’s some fruity Belgian phenolic character, but it’s on the mild side and stays far from cloying territory. It’s yeastily dry with a good dose of orange peel and hop bitterness in the finish. The beer is refreshing and drinkable. You get a bit more Belgian character, but it’s all light malt and fruit notes. "Belgian IPA" doesn’t really describe this beer well, as it’s definitely an IPA melded with a witbier. It’s summery, spicy and lightly hoppy. The hops are wonderfully restrained while still making a significant contribution. Carbonation is fairly strong. There’s no booze to be found. The beer is light on the palate and lacks any rough edges. It tastes fresh. There’s a sort of saison-ish quality to it. This beer is more than the sum of its parts. It’s hard to stop drinking and easy to like.
