The secret is in the 2.5 pounds of spice per barrel for this fall brew. We add the pumpkin during the mash at precisely the right time to create just the perfect balance of malt, hops, pumpkin and spice.

Location: 22 oz bottle from Gilly's, 11/16/09
Aroma: The aroma has some of the nice pumpkin spice and other spice characteristics I like in this style
Appearance: A mostly clear orange color with a thin lasting head, and light, drippy lace
Flavor: The taste is also lots of spice malts with a nice hop backing, spice is more cinnamon and nutmeg then pumpkin
Palate: The carbonation is pretty high for this beer, the mouthfeel is pretty nice, and a bit dry, and a bit of alcohol feel
Overall Impression: This is a pretty good Pumpkin beer, but my main complaint is that the pumpkin spice is not as predominant as I would like it to be. That is only a minor compliant though, as I did enjoy this beer. As winter beers start to show up more, and this style is less available in stores, I can already tell I'm about to start missing the pumpkin beers. This is a quite good one.

On tap. Pours a dark transparent orange color with a very thin white head. Aroma is of pumpkin pie - completely pumpkin and spice. It is very smooth and the alcohol is quite hidden.

Bottle via a trade from Cletus (I think). Pours with a white head and a hazy orange body. Aroma of pumpkin pie, spice, nutmeg and bready notes. Taste is a bit of a let down. Sweet over all with light spice and a large vegital note. Light bubbles and a dry mouthfeel.

This brew pours a hazy golden orange color with a medium off-white head that dissipates slowly. Rings of lacing on the glass. Pumpkin spices in the nose along with some malt and vanilla. Medium body with flavors of pumpkins and nutmeg on top of hops and malt. The finish is a concoction of nutmeg, clove and pumpkins with a moderately bitter hops aftertaste. Decent beer overall that doesn’t delve very far into the pumpkin patch.

Deep orange coloured body with a nice sized thinnish tan head. Aroma of potent pumpkin, some spices, alcohol and a good caramel scent. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong assertive pumpkin and squash flavours with nutmeg and cinnamon coming through too. Aftertaste shows a lot of pumpkin, good caramel and a touch of yeast - not much spiciness, but way more pumpkin and malt. Overall, a good pumpkin beer - definitely worth trying if you can find it, but the high alcohol and the minimal spices make it not the best overall beer for the season. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Norm’s in Vienna, Virginia on 02-October-2009, sampled on the Eastern Shore of Virginia on 24-October-2009.
