Our anniversary is in the middle of winter; the darkest, coldest days in the Mid Atlantic. To celebrate our first anniversary, we brewed a very special, strong dark ale to warm us against the cold.

Imperial Stout is an extra strong version of stout, which originally was brewed by the British to withstand the rigors of export. We used the West Malle Trappist yeast to give it a Belgian character. The beer shows aromas of bakers chocolate and dried fruits. It is rich, dark and strong, with flavors of espresso and dark swiss chocolate, spice and a touch of orange zest.

Just as good as I remember it was when it came out originally - took me back to the night at Galaxy Hut where I had the original on tap.

A dark imperial stout with a thin brown head. In aroma, sweet fruity chocolate malt with light Brett, light oxidation cork, vanilla and alcohol warmth, very nice. In mouth, a nice sweet fruity chocolate malt with light grassy hops, light licorice, alcohol warmth, light oxidation, dark fruits, interesting. On tap at Ginger Man NYC.

On tap at Black Squirrel’s Michigan beer event during DC Beer Week 2014. Pours a murky deep brown with some clumpy beige head. Nose has a lot of malt, brown sugar, a bit of tree bark, some cocoa nib, perhaps a hint of booze. Flavor is malty, crackery, bread crust, cocoa, hints of booze, something a bit umami too, like roasted mushroom. Smooth finish. Held up well.

Good show for these local guys. They make a great porter and this is a very drinkable, balanced imperial stout. Pours black with great head and lacing. Roast and dark chocolate with some subtle hops. Sweet and bitter finish. Booze well hidden. Hopefully they bring this back and pump it up a little to make something truly great. Tap at Black Squirrel.
