The Liberator was made as a 30th birthday gift to Joe Short. As a double IPA, this beast employs a sizable malt bill, but it is the crazy amount of hops added to the boil every 4 minutes, for 120 minutes, that really make this beer special. Fruity, floral, and piney hop flavors penetrate throughout the caramelized malt profile. The Liberator is a well-balanced, full bodied brew that has a bitter finish due to the post fermentation addition of lemon and orange zest.
The name, The Liberator, came from Joe’s name for the Short’s employees who carry out our company’s mission statement as “Beer Liberators”, freeing the masses from their misconceptions surrounding beer.

Orange, biscuit malt, pine, and grapefruit peel aroma. Amber with large light tan head. Mildly sweet orange, biscuit malt, and strong bitter grapefruit peel, pine, and quinine flavor. Good body. Hop bomb.

Slightly hazy golden and copper coloured body with a thinnish, single centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of bright pungent hops with pineapple, resin, pine, grapefruit and citrus all noticeable - all with some syrupy sweet smells, a good deal of alcohol and some malt that seems to provide a nice balance. Medium-bodied; Biting hops up front with citrus, grapefruit, alcohol, pine and a fresh pineapple flavour make for a nice bitterness, while the smooth and layered malt provide good balance. Aftertaste has a bit of an alcohol burn at first, but the citrus and tropical fruits mellow that out and show a smooth finish with not only a large hop bitterness, but a fruity and sweet note as well. Overall, a nice Imperial IPA with a good profile and smoothish drinking, while still having a good deal of alcohol and a pungent hop and citrus flavour. Good to sample and well worth trying if you can find it! I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Merchant’s in Dearborn, Michigan on 10-December-2016 for US$2,79 sampled at home on the Eastern Shore of Virginia on 15-January-2017.

Draft. Hazy, dark gold. Malty, piney aroma. Malty, bitter, bitter palate. Not a citrusy, hoppy IPA. Not complex, just simple well-done bitterness.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 12/13/2013. Pours moderately hazy orange amber color with a 1-2 finger dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with some moderate streaming carbonation. Aromas of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, lemon zest, orange zest, orange rind, floral, grass, pine, light caramel, and floral earthiness. Fantastic aromas with big citrus peel and citrus hop presence with moderate malt balance; and great strength. Taste of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, orange zest, lemon zest, orange rind, floral, grass, pine, light caramel, bread, and floral earthiness. Large amount of pine resin bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, orange/lemon zest, orange rind, floral, grass, pine, light caramel, bread, and floral earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice flavors with huge citrus peel and citrus/pine hop flavors with moderate malt balance; with a great malt/bitterness balance and minimal cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a slightly creamy, smooth, and very sticky/resinous mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming present after the finish. Overall this is an excellent DIPA. All around great balance and complexity of citrus/pine hops, citrus peel, and moderate malt flavors; and nicely smooth to sip on even with the big bitterness that is present. A very enjoyable offering.

Bottle as shown. Pours a cloudy orange with small frothy white head leaving sticky lacing along the glass. The aroma is a strong lemon zest and floral hop. Thin mouthfeel with a strong citrus hop and resin. Light bitterness on the finish hiding alcohol well. A verey good IIPA from Shorts.

Cloudy amber beer. Fluffy off white head. Semi crisp and semi dry palate, turning softer. Deep rich hops with nicely balanced creamy malt. Zingy minerals before a bitter finish with the orange and lemon peel coming through. Very drinkable DIPA - could sink a few of these.

Bottle shared by JaBier. The beer is a clear amber color with a medium white head. Sticky top ring of lacing with spots underneath. Aroma of citrusy hops and roasted malt. Medium to full body with a grapefruity hops character and notes of sweet bready malt and honey. The finish is citrusy with a lingering piney hops aftertaste. Solid all around.

Awesome bottle of DIPA thanks to blutt59. Pours with a large off-white head over a hazy orange body. Aroma of grapefruit, herbal hops and a ton of citrus. Taste is herbal, dank and strong citrus hops. Grapefruit rind. Nice and bitter. Light bubbles and dry. Outstanding!
