Matt Vandenberghe and Matt Bonney of Brouwers/Bottleworks trekked over to Colorado to attend the Great American Beer Festival and made their way over to Fort Collins to pay New Belgium a little visit. Along with “some of the Click Distributing guys, their guys and Dave and Jennifer Keane (from the Toronado),” they did a full tasting of each and every one of [New Belgium’s] foedres.”

Bonney and Vandenberghe decided on a blend of three beers from foedres #3 , #13, and #2 .

According to New Belgium Sensory Expert, Lauren Salazar, “This one actually used both our dark and light base beers – we usually use the dark for La Folie and the light for Eric’s Ale and Le Terroir, but they found a nice blend of both- old, mid and young barrels. After Eric blended and filtered he dosed the bottles and kegs with Brettanomyces Lambicus (not our house strain of brett), this one is known for its barnyard aromas- they really wanted to bring in the funk.”

Tasting at Eugene’s; corked bottle
Cloudy amber color with copper hue, small head. Nice aroma, sour with a lot of cherry pits, and some funkiness. Puckery sour, cherry flavor, very acidic; astringent in the final.
Very nice. Extreme. Complex.

Bottle. Pours a cloudy dark orange with small off white head that diminishes to nothing. The aroma is funky, grape must, oak. Thin mouth, tart grape, funky, lemon, light acidity, held up very nice.

Bottle poured at a tasting. I have learned that Bottleworks anniversary beers are among the best I have ever had. I would say especially sours, but that is unfair. They are all good. This was so far from an exception. Thick apple juice like pour with a sour orange fruit aroma. Super sour cherry and apple flavor. Excellent tart linger to it. Those guys just get how to blend a beer. One of the best.

750mL bottle, pours a cloudy amber orange with a small white head. Aroma is quite complex, with wood from the barrels upfront along with various wild yeasts. Flavour is very complex, with loads of red wine barrels, medium tartness and wild yeasts. Harmonious and wonderfully balanced. The age has done this well, with no off-notes discernible. Excellent.
