Stillwater Artisanal Ales & DC Brau's NATAS Collaboration Beer - NATAS is a Belgian Style Imperial Porter brewed with a traditional high gravity Abbey yeast. At first glance this brew is pitch black in the glass, with wafting aroma's of burnt sugar and caramelized fruit. The mouthfeel is silky smooth with hints of cocoa. It has a gentle, warming phenolic character that begs for a follow up inquiry. The hops are used to balance this brew and lend a subtle complexity. The dark lord himself would be proud to serve this hellish offering to his legions of demonic minions.

5-6 oz draft pour at Of Love & Regret. Black with tan head. Aromas of cocoa, chocolate, vanilla. Tastes of chocolate, vanilla, roast, cream, herbs, spices, Belgian yeast. Medium-full body with a dry finish. Creamy mouthfeel, medium-low carbonation. Tasty.

Awesome with great balance. Tastes like oatmeal stout with light honey sense possibly from burnt sugar. Pours black with good head and lacing. Finishes with light sweetness. Nice roast profile. To hell with summer session beers, this is where it’s at. Keep in mind my great rating of this beer could be in comparison to all the trash I’ve had today. On tap at DC Summerfest.

64oz growler from DC Brau. Pours an opaque black, watery consistency, slim beige head. Nose is an interesting blend of both breweries styles, the malty backbone of DC Brau dark beers is evident, nutty, toast, some dark chocolate, a little Stillwater-y herbaceousness, lightly yeasty. Flavor is malty, sweet, a little licorice, some toasted bread crust, a little roast mushroom, some dried rosemary, chocolate. Thin on the tongue, dry finish.

RFD, DC 12oz ($6.50): Pours black with a brown head. Aroma is pretty much straight chocolate porter. I didn’t catch much Belgian yeast in this house. Taste is mostly chocolate with hints of espresso and plenty of roasted malt. This was good, but I was expecting something more unique and complex.

Draft at Churchkey. Poured a dark color, almost black in the dim light of Churchkey, but when put up against the light, it’s a maroon, dark ruby red color. The head is small, and tan. Aroma is roasted malts, with notes of dried fruits (prune, date almost). Flavor is roasted, notes of dried fruits. Pretty enjoyable.

Served on draft at the brewery. Pours a dark brown color with a medium creamy tan head. Decent head retention. Aroma of sweet malts, roasted malts, smoke and chocolate. The taste is roasted malts, smoke, cherries, plum, citrus, other fruits and a bitter hop finish. Medium bodied.

Draft at DC Brau. Pours very dark maroon, medium brown head with fair retention and good lacing. Aroma of roasted coffee, dates, prunes, dark cocoa. Taste is dark fruits in a background of roasted malts. Subtle and understated with lots of character. Finally, a porter that isn’t a chocolate syrup bomb. A successful collaboration, I think.
