Black & Red is a velvety smooth, dry-minted stout with a serious fruit problem! The huge portion of heavily roasted grains brings a dry, chocolatey character that contrasts Black & Red's sweet, fruity, full body.

As you tilt your glass, you'll notice that the black color you are perceiving is actually a very deep red and that the rich creamy foam has a tinge of pink to it. Black & Red starts off roasted and warming with a robust mintiness from 100 pounds of organic mint (from our friends at Washington's Green Grocer) added to the secondary fermentation and finishes out sweet and smooth.

Black & Red is draft-only.

Peppermint dominated aroma, some butterscotch. Black, thin tan head. blood consistency, alcohol a little too much. Creme de menthe flavor, very sweet, with dark chocolate notes. Beer’s version of a grasshopper, but not very well done. Too much mint.

The server talked us out of ordering a full glass of this but brought us a half glass sample. It was black with a brown head. Aroma of Nyquil and similar taste. I’m glad she talked us out of it!

I had some serious doubts going in to this beer. +++ Sampled on draft at the Headkeeper in Greensburg PA this beer poured a black color with a medium sized foamy dark brown head that lingered and left good lacing. The aroma was sweet Dr Pepper, mint, licorice and rum. The flavor was tart and bitter with strong notes of berries, cherries, mint, vanilla, toasty malts and undertones of cocoa, licorice and rum. The flavor seems to change with each taste - one sip strong on one element and then the next completely different. The finish was very long with tart berries, mint, vanilla and rum. Full and creamy body. Marvelously different and complex.

Sample at Gallo’s. The beer is an opaque black color with a thin tan head that dissipates quickly. Short strings of lacing on the glass. Aroma reminiscent of toothpaste, as well as berries and grain. Rather full syrupy body with flavors of mint, raspberry and grainy malt. The finish is mint chocolate with a malt aftertaste. Disjointed and not overly enjoyable overall.

A deep dark stout with a thin brown head. In aroma, a superb pungent mix of raspberry mash and chocolate, red wine, lactic notes, some light Brett notes. In mouth, sweet raspberry chocolate sunday, alcohol warmth, lactic points, very nice. On tap at Oregon Brewer’s Fest, July 31 2011.

Served on draft at the Falls Church Alehouse on 6/10/11. Pours a very dark brown color with a large creamy tan head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma of mint, chocolate and berries. The taste is mine, berries, chocolate and booze. Medium-full bodied. Too minty. Not a fan of this one.

Draft @ the brewpub. Pours a black color with a small tan head. Has a fruity malty minty aroma with roasted hints. Sweetish roasted malty raspberry flavor with hints of mint. Has a roasted malty sweetish minty raspberry finish.

Dogfish Head Alehouse - Falls Church. Poured a black color with ruby notes, wispy white head. Aroma was chocolate, licorice, what we described as anise, and something we couldn’t place until we found out it was mint, and by gum it was certainly mint we smelled. Flavor was much the same, with notes of a sweet fruit - maybe raspberries? Chocolate, mint. Mouthfeel was okay, but a bit sweet. The alcohol was absolutely hidden in this brew.

I was impressed with this particular beer.
