While known for their lagers, German brewers also produce terrific ales. French Broad’s Kölsch is faithful to the great German ales found in Köln. Golden in color, with a refreshing crispness, pleasantly sweet malt finish, and distinctive German hopping.

Tap. Ok beer. Golden in color. Aroma, mild, grass, malt. Taste was a grassy malt with just a tad of hops.

Pint at the AVL airport as I wait to j another delay. Lacy, clear, gold with a twinge of piss. Saline & veg nose. Taste is crusty toast, no char, whole wheat pasta, plus some underlying salty mineral quality & celery that's odd. Lingering bitter veg. Not exactly clean. Frothy, thin, hidden acid. Meh to okay.

This beer pours a clear pale golden color with a medium white head that dissipates gradually to an outer ring. Short strings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of herbal hops, fruit and malt. Light-bodied with flavors of grassy hops, bready malt and a bit of fruit. The finish is mildly bitter with a grassy hop aftertaste. Decent overall.

Bot. Somewhat soapy aroma. Lighter pale slight haze. Large rocky head that does not fade. Initially good co2. Taste is quite hoppy and bitter for what I believe to be a kolsch. Yes, almost astringent on the tongue. perhaps there is a tad of sweetness but that astringent impact is so prevalent. Same with the finish. A little difficult to enjoy.

Keg at the Weinhaus, Asheville, 17/02/15. Clear golden with a decent off white covering. Nose is pale malts, straw, caramel, light lemon vibe. Taste comprises citric peel, vanilla, light caramel, bready. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Adequate for style.

Location: Draft at Weinhaus, 12/31/14

Aroma: Grainy and cereal malts, some crisp German hops, and fruity notes
Appearance: Pours a clear golden color with a decent sized white head and average lace
Flavor: Tastes similarly, with clean German hops, grainy/cereal malts, lightly sweet and bitter
Palate: The body is light-medium, nice mouthfeel, not watery at all, clean and easy drinking
Overall Impression: I thought this was a solid, enjoyable example of the style. The malt and hops are in a nice balance. It is not amazing, but I had no complaints.
