On tap at Plan B. Poured a cloudy brown orange. Aroma is dominated by both barley and alcohol. The taste follows the same path. For me it is overwhelming. This is odd for me because I have enjoyed barley wines in the past but this one is over the top. The first Mikkeller on didn’t like. Maybe I am missing something.

500 ml bottle. Hazy amber body with a small beige head. Aroma is dominated by grapefruit and pines. Flavor is sweet caramel malt and lots of bitterness, citrus fruity and alcohol. Could easily go as an Imperial IPA.

RB#2100. 50 cL bottle, tasted head to head with Big Worse Barley Wine, my outmost thanks to Ungstrup for providing me this fantastic opportunity to taste my most sought after DK beer. Pours deep orange with a fizzy head. Aroma is FULL, dried fruit and filling malty roasted, alcohol and with a totally gone sweetness, worse seems slight faint in comparison. Full bodied. Flavour starts woody and slowly, and I mean: s l o w l y, goes into a nice liqourice finish and then again leaves some deep dried fruity, barley and woody tones in the far finish. Fantastic. Worse is more fruity and sweet compared to this, and clearly lacks a lot of cellaring.

Mahogany color with red shades; huge creamy head; it deserved my original Cuvée de l’Ermitage Grand Cru glass! Very nice aroma, medium strong, malty of course, with an elegant hoppy note, developing over time. Full mouthfeel, very good balance of malts and hops, powerful but not cloying; good hop fruitness and excellent final, long and fruity, with enough resins.

(Bottle 50 cl) 11% version. Pours a dark amber with a reddish hue and a slight haze. Delicate, creamy, beige coloured head settling cappuchinoish on top. Very intense and lightly perfumy nose full of aroma hops. Full-bodied all right, but not really when you take the 11% ABV into consideration. Notes of caramel and an underlying sweetness. But the bitterness builds up on my palate to become quite massive and overwhelming. And for a malthead like me the last 10 cl were tough. Heavy yeast sediment at the bottom. But this really is a monster of a Barley Wine - American style - and a great beer by all standards. 180206

Bottled. (#2) Bronze-colored and slightly hazy. Beige, huge head. Lovely aroma that reminds me more of an IIPA than of a BW, with it’s fruity american hops. Flavor is quite intense hoppy, but also fruity and citric. Astringent, long bitter finish. (051104)

Hazy brown to amber; small yellowish head. Great dry American hopsnose, grapey, super like the best I²PA’s. Sweet, cake-y first impression going on to dry hoppy, light-bitter taste, great balance. Very full-bodied, but it appears lighter by the dryness/hoppiness. Ends smooth-velvety. Great BW, though it is as much Double IPA as Barley Wine.

Bottle at the RBG Low Countries 2005 tasting session
Creamy, off-white head, which diminishes mostly. Muddy, deep amber body. Intense aroma of flowers, liquor and alcohol, maybe a little bit too intense. Lightly sweet, moderately bitter initial flavour. Lightly sweet, heavily bitter, long finish. Fully bodied, soft carbonation. The finish is quite weird in contrast to the initial flavour. The initial flavour is good, but then suddenly a flavour-bomb explodes and attacks your tastebuds. Nice and very interesting.

A hazy red-brown beer with a thin orange head. The aroma is sweet with a very big bad alcohol presence. The flavor is sweet malty with notes of caramel, cascade hops, and lots of alcohol, and with a dry end. Nice one.
