Charkoota Rye is a Smoked Rye Dopplebock. An homage to all things Pig, including Porkapalooza and the age-old tradition of Charcuterie, Charkoota Rye’s malty backbone is derived from a blend of rye and four other malts,
including malted barley smoked over cherry wood. Its smoke-forward body is balanced with tones of deep mollasses and caramel, with a crisp, clean lager finish.

Deep dark brown coloured body with almost no head at all. Aroma of very strong rye, spices and herbs, with some malt and alcohol coming through too - of course a bit of smoke at the end. Medium-bodied; Strong rye flavour with some coffee notes and strong flavours that fade very fast to an oily maltiness - an odd texture, for sure. Aftertaste has a bit of the smoked peat notes, but not much else - fairly simplistic. Overall, an okay beer, but just an odd body to it and showing a bit too strong of a flavour profile. Still nice to try on draught close to the source. I sampled this pint on draught at Graydon’s Crossing in Grand Rapids, Michigan on 06-November-2010.

Draft at Rustico. Poured a dark brown color with a medium sized medium-dark tan head. Aroma was mild smoked malt, dark roasted malts in there too, sweet woody character to it as well. Flavor had plenty of that cherry wood character, some mellow smoke notes, molasses. Pretty enjoyable.

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, 2010 vintage. Pours a clear and extremely dark reddish brown color with a small light tan head with ok retention that reduces to a a ring of lacing. Light spotty lacing on the glass. Aromas of big caramel, smoked meat, molasses, raisin, prune, toast, bread, oak, herbal, earth, chocolate, toffee, and rye. Very nice aromas with great balance and complexity. Taste of big caramel, toffee, raisin, prune, molasses, smoke, bread, oak, chocolate, toast, herbal, earth, rye, and light peppery spiciness. Lingering notes of dark fruit, caramel, molasses, smoke, toast, earth, and rye on the finish for a good bit. Great balance of all flavors; with a very nice amount of complexity. Smokiness is not overpowering and compliments the style nicely. Minimal cloying sweetness. Medium carbonation and body; with a fairly creamy, slick, and slightly syrupy mouthfeel as expected for the style. Alcohol is well hidden with only a small warming noticed after the finish. Definitely a sipper, but is still very smooth. Overall this is an excellent smoked doppelbock. Very nice flavor complexity and balance, and very smooth to sip on. A highly enjoyable offering, well done.

Sample at the Central OH BA Tasting at From The Vine on 06/02/2012: This brew is a dark brown color with a medium light tan head that diminishes slowly. Partial rings of lacing. Campfire aroma with some malt. Medium body with flavors of smoky ham, charred ashy cinders and fried rubber. The finish is insanely smoky with a grainy aftertaste. Just too much.

Bottle. Apple, smoky ham, and rye malt aroma. Dark brown color with small head. Sweet apple, smoked ham, rye malt flavor with moderately bitter herbal hops finish. Nice body. On the sweet side but pretty good.

22oz bottle poured into a shaker. Pours a dark brown with a slight ruby hue. Almost no head. Aroma of caramel, chocolate, smoked cherry wood and some dark fruits. Taste is medium sweet. Lots of smoked cherry and caramel. A good bit of caramel then a huge finish of solid smoke. Medium bodied with a somewhat thin yet sticky texture. Lively carbonation and a very long smokey finish. Overall, very good. I would love to put this in my chili or marinade some chicken in it.
