Notes from March 2011 My condolences to Solomon on the review below. $3.95 for a 32oz fill at New Beer. DFH rounded pint glass. Ever so slightly darker then average amber golden ale. Glows orange while still settling. Strong white lather. Ugly, blotchy, lace. Smells of orange rind, black pepper, & lots of doughy stuff that could be interpreted any way you want it. Big alcohol. There is also a pineapple juice-like aroma I'm sensing. Honey-ish sweetness upfront, irritating tangerine rind, bit of a tang. More like sourdough then rye to me, but it's presence is more then subtle. Hops are a catty/piney, & linger just long enough to have the malt overtake it. Eventual dry finish. Take away the suspect simcoe(or whatever the extra hairy/pissy hop variety is being used) & I'm putting down a five here. Carbonation is frothy, but not strong. You really feel the additional heft contributed to this beer through the rye, but it maintains it's drinkability through sheer want & need from one sip to the next. Alcohol is decently integrated, but you will get some feedback by the trail end of the pint. Even though it starts off sweet, it cuts very well to the end without dragging it's muffler. I'm not even a big IPA fan & I really enjoyed this. Edit: I was a bit hungry half way through, & found some scraps of parm. reggiano that just cut it perfectly. Sad that I didn't fill up any other containers. Great beer & an even better value.

On tap at Beer Republic during SF Beer Week, what a week! Pours clear deep gold with near white head and some spotty lacing. The aroma has plenty of Belgian yeasty spiciness, mild sweetness and slight spicy hop notes off to the side. The taste is very similar with big bold Belgo yeasty spices and clove and coriander followed by mild sweet maltiness and hints of spiciness like rye or spicy hoppiness. Too Belgo spiciness for me. I would love to try this with the Belgo influence off in the background and the rye and IPA up front.

Tap at Freshcraft - hazy golden pour, with an impressive head - aggressively bitter citric hop character - a bit of heft from the yeast - fairly dry for the strength - the yeast kicks out just enough phenols to compliment the dry malt and bitterness of the hops without overpowering the rest of the beer’s character - can’t really detect any rye, but it might be swallowed in the spiciness of the hops - quite good.

On tap at the Alibi Room, pours hazy golden with an off-white head. Aroma of potent hops with huge rye notes dominating - wonderful nose profile. Flavour is no less uncompromising - like a rye turned into an Imp. IPA - very hoppy with a rye like main body. Most wonderful.
