First whiff is pure spice and Christmas and near-olfactory overload. Gorgeous, though, with a nice, billowing beige head atop a devilishly red color. But the taste is akin to a piece of Big Red. I’m guessing that the top-secret brewmaster’s spice is cinnamon, and he’s quite the heavy hand with it. I’m an idiot, though, so all bets are off. The bitter finish comes along unexpectedly and proves to be an unwelcome guest, out of balance with the sweet front of the brew. Looks like Never Summer is a bummer. No, I can’t believe I just wrote that. (12/20/08)

Refrigerated bottle poured into a shaker. Pours a copper color with small head that dissapates quickly. Aroma is hops, medium carbonation, and very little lacing. Taste isa little malt and long bitter finish. Not a fan of this one.

Bottle. Beer of the month club. Clear deep amber color with a medium beige head. Aroma of piney hops, some flowers, malt, caramel, cookie notes, and light fruitiness. Flavor starts with some chewy caramelly malt sweetness with light spicy notes in the background, and continues to a bitter hoppy finish, slightly resiny, with some pine and citrus notes. Medium-bodied. Not too bad but doesn’t really feel like a spiced beer or a winter warmer.

12 oz bottle, small stable creamy head, crystal clear darkish copper colour, aroma of caramel fruit and spice, flavour of caramel and toasted bread with a strong persistent bitterness that lingers on for quite a while. Good satisfying brew.

Nice ruby tinted deep copper coloured body with a thick dense tan head - very nice looking. Aroma of malt, light spices, caramel and a touch of alcohol - this one is very mild in the nose. Medium-bodied; Chewy malt flavours at first with cherries, caramel and toffee coming through soon afterwards. Aftertaste shows mild raisins and sweetness with the lightest of spice and nuts. Overall, a decent beer, but it’s really too weak to determine a strong flavour profile. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Chevy Chase Wine & Spirits in Washington, DC on 15-February-2010, sampled at home in Washington on 19-February-2010.

Bottle thanks to jbye4334. Pours with a reddish bronze body and a large off-white head. Aroma of vanilla, spice, cinnamon, bread, licorice, nutmeg and alcohol. Sarsaparilla and something else I’m missing. Taste is bitter, alcohol, leather, chocolate and spice. Some bready and light nutty notes. A bit of bark. A bit vegetal. Light and bubbly carbonation.

Pours deep mahogany into a shaker. Off-white head recedes to sicken surface. Sour malt aromas. Crisp with upfront dark caramel turning slightly resinous in the dry, lasting bitter finish.

bottle - Pours a murky brown color with a very thin head. It has a rich aroma of caramel malt with hints of dark fruit and spices. The flavor is sweet and spicy with some mild hops in the finish. It’s medium bodied and did seem a little watery even as it warmed. Still it was a tasty, enjoyable brew.
