As the 500-year-old Mühlviertel tradition goes, on special occasions brewery workers would fill large buckets (Kübel) with beer directly from the fermentation tanks. They would then pass around this extremely fresh, unfiltered beer and drink from the Kübel in turn. Because none of the proteins, yeast, or hop essences had been filtered out, this beer was fuller and more aromatic than any other they served. For this exact reason, our former head brewer, Franz Krammer, took it upon himself to bring this age-old tradition back to life.

Bottle at Churchkey, courtesy of Rory and Ollie from Northern Ireland, thank you gents! Very malty, slightly syrupy beer, resembles a barley wine. Decent enough.

Bottle. Pours deep gold, very bubbly, with a fine white head. Earthy aroma, some sweet malts, bread, grass. Modestly sweet flavor, some honey and caramel, plenty of earthy malts. Crisp and sweet on the tail, faint hops. Good, rich flavor. Medium bodied and effervescent. Really good.

Bottle. Pours with a clear amber golden body and a minimal, fading white head. Aroma of grain, sweetness, cornbread, bread and a light smoke. Taste is very sweet, lightly floral with honey, biscuit, tea, and a strong bitter/astringent finish. Medium to high bubbles. Dry mouthfeel. Good.

Typical foreign lager aroma of honey, malt, and grass. Clear golden, medium vanishing head. Medium bodied. Malty with a nicely bitter grass finish. Nothing spectacular, just a well done lager.

500 mL bottle from Beer Run in Charlottesville, VA. Pours a slightly hazy orange color with a medium head. Fair head retention and lacing. Aroma is slightly toasted bread with lots of fruity notes. Something slightly odd and spicy lingers in the background. Taste is bready, very spicy... with anise, cinnamon, pepper and juniper notes. Fairly dry. Medium bodied.

Pour is a hazy orange with a small white head. Aroma is flowery with seom herbal hops and a bit of honey. Flavor is kinda a let down. Lots of wet paper bag dominate everything. Some malts do come through but not enough to save this one. It turns into a boring lager real fast.
