Serum is our version of a Double(Imperial) India Pale Ale. It is aggressively hopped at several stages of the brewing process including a dry hopping that takes place little by little over a 2 week period. With an OG close to 19Plato, this beer is big and hoppy, yet has a strong malt backbone that keeps the huge hop bitterness from being overbearing.

Bottle. Pours a fairly clear orange with a medium frothy white head. Aromas are pine and citrus with just a hint of earthy/spicy hops that seemed to pop a bit more right after pour and then they faded quite a bit. Flavor has a nice bunch of hops and a mediocre grain presence. As for the hops, they provide a nice bitter punch and a fairly good copy of the nose aromas... lots of resin and grapefruit peel. The malt body is a little flawed though... it’s not awful, but it does have a kind of grain dust edge to it (like when you are in a silo or something) that is a little chewier than I would like. ABV is a nice throat-warming (but not hot) addition.

Bottle: Poured alight amber color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and some light lacing. Aroma of bitter earthy hops with dry caramel malt notes. Taste is also dominated by bitter hops notes with limited complexity and some lightly sweet malt backbone. Body is about average with good carbonation. I thought there was too much malt and limited hops presence with a lacks of complexity in the hops profile.

The Irish Pol, tap: Pours brownish with whitish head. Aroma is caramel malt and some citrus hoppiness. Taste is citrus hops, but in tragically short quantity. Malt takes over. Some people compared this to a badly aged DIPA. I wouldn’t agree 100%, but I’ll be honest that the analogy is not far off. No excuse for this coming on tap... or maybe there is.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a hazy orange-bronze color with a medium sized foamy orange-beige head that lingered and left decent lacing. The aroma was tangy sour caramel, pine, and bock like vegetal malts. The flavor was sweet and tangy malts, sour caramel, pine, a light vegetal presence, dried pineapple, nut and tobacco. Long tangy fruit and sour caramel finish. Moderately bull bodied and syrupy. There is an off presence that I am unable to identify but it really detracted. Eh.

12 ounce bottle. Amber orange color topped by a medium-sized creamy beige head. Sweet toasted caramel malt nose with a pleasant fruity hop bouguet. Fruity bittersweet malt and spicy citrusy hops upfront. Lot’s of flavors here. Resiny hops, toasted malt and a subtle alcohol burn. Very well balanced and a delicious Double IPA. nice clinging lace lasts right until the end.

Location: Draft at Arundal Mills Brewpub, 5/28/12

Aroma: This one has a big grapefruit and grass nose
Appearance: It has a cloudy golden pour, white head, mid plus lace
Flavor: This one tastes light sweet, mid-plus bitter/hoppy
Palate: Medium bodied with a creamy feel, a soft carbonation, and a dry finish
Overall Impression: I thought that this one was a solid, but not top of style DIPA. Another very solid offering from DuClaw, one of many beers from this trip that fit that description.

Shared a 22oz bottle. Poured a slightly hazy copper color with a small off-white head. Aroma was very malt-forward, but not very hoppy here. Flavor was about the same, malt-forward, no where near as hoppy as expected. Drinkable, but meh.

22 ounce bottle form Whole Foods Market Charlottesville, VA. Pours a clear amber color with a large creamy tan head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma of floral and citrus hop notes. The taste is bitter resiny hops with citrus and tropical notes. Melon as well. Some toffee malts in the background are pretty much dominated by the hops. Medium bodied.
