100 barrel series. A strong and dark Wheat Wine-style Ale crafted by Jason and Todd Alström at the Harpoon Brewery in Windsor, VT. Brewed with 50% malt and 50% wheat, including German chocolate and caramel wheat and Munich malt, spiced with 4 hop varieties, and fermented clean with the Chico yeast strain. Unfiltered and dry-hopped. Deceiving light, yet tremendously flavorful.

Sampled on draft at the Headkeeper this beer poured a black color with a medium sized foamy brown head that lingered and left great lacing. The aroma was pine, faint roasty malts, cherry and anise. The flavor was initially boozy giving way to moderate notes of molasses, fig, cherry, pine, anise and a touch of roasty malts. The finish was long with molasses, cherry, fig and a bit of alcohol lingering. Fairly full bodied. Interesting.

Location: 12 oz bottle from Buy Rite, 12/22/11, as Leviathan Trictus...H E-A JAR!

Aroma: The nose has roasted malts, chocolate, caramel, spice, dark fruit, and a touch of booze
Appearance: This one pours a dark brown color with a thin, fizzy, off-white head, and minimal lace
Flavor: The taste is rather heavy malt (caramel, chocolate, and a little fruit) balanced by some spicey yeast
Palate: The body is medium-full, its a little sticky, with a fizzy feel, and with a fair amount of boozy heat
Overall Impression: This is a pretty interesting one. It is fairly heavily malted, but the spice and booze balance it out. It isn't overly sweet at all. It also doesn't haven't much hop presence. It still seems to work though, and the booziness isn't over-the-top enough to really detract from the overall drinkability much. I like what they did/tried to do here. A solid, interesting offering.

Imported from my RateBeer account as Harpoon 100 Barrel Series #10 - Triticus (by Harpoon Brewery):

2/10/2011 on tap @ Harpoon Brewery (2011-495)

Clear deep purple beer, small aery beige to brown head, non stable, non adhesive. Aroma: rotten fruits, overripe strawberries, caramel, some mocha, banana peels. MF: ok carbon, full body, creamy texture. Taste: red fruits, alcohol, bit sweet, caramel, ripe cherries, ripe banana, more alcohol. Aftertaste: sour red berries, alcohol, sweet, bit tart in the finish. Very good stuff, just the alcohol is a bit too present. But then again, 11.5% is pretty hard to disguise!

8/4/2010 New beer picked up at Bert’s today shoved in the freezer and enjoyed by the air conditioner after dinner. Bottle says 11.5% abv. Pours a deep brown with mahogany highlights and a thinnish off white head that rapidly dissipates to a ring on top. Smells of sweet candy and dark fruits, burnt sugar, roasted grain and a touch of alcohol. Taste is sweet with fruits, raisins, cherries and plums come to mind. Molasses and dark sugar rolled in ethanol. Long lingering alcohol burn and hop bitterness in the finish. Creamy mouthfeel, medium body with a medium dry finish, light carbonation. The alcohol becomes more and more evident in both the aroma and the taste the longer I let this one sit. This beer could use some time to mellow out.

On tap. Poured a hazy dark brown with a light brown head that dissipated to the edges. Aroma had a strong sweet fruit note accompanied by a relatively strong alcohol note and a nice wheat backbone. Flavor was similar with strong sweet fruit, less alcohol and the same nice wheat backbone.
