Fermented with dates and figs, this smooth barleywine has a unique flavor.
The concept for this beer came from an old cellerman's manual Sam came across (for more on that, check out the video below).
At about 15% ABV, this beer is a great candidate for aging. Over time, the beer dries out and the pit fruit flavors come forward and the hops recede. Our recommendation? Grab a few bottles when you find it -- enjoy one now, and age the others for a bit. Let us know which you prefer!

Bottled in 2012B - Pours reddish orange with a small white head. Aroma of caramel, toffee, syrup, ripe fruits, hints of jam, berries and dates. Taste is a bit boozy, woody and malty with loads of ripe fruits, syrup, toffee, caramel, dates and hints of berries. Finish is sweet, warming and heavy with some ripe fruits, caramel, toffee, berries, hints of syrup. Quite sweet and heavy slow sipper.

35,5 cl bottle @ home. Bottled 2012.
Aroma is sweet and complex with caramel, toffee, jam and raisins. Flavour has alcohol, woody tones, vanilla, and caramel. Okay, the alcohol is sharp here but it fits in and cuts the sweetness.

Investiver, ziemlich süßer Antrunk. Leichte Oxidierung, geringe Schokoladigkeit. Alkoholische Noten, vollmundig. Die Süße wird zum Glück geringer, weich, minimale Herbe. Nett, etwas zu viel Alkohol. 8/11/12/10/13/11

Bottle. Pours a cloudy orange with medium off white head that lasts leaving sticky lacing. The aroma is strong booze and dark fruit. Thin mouth, sweet honey malt, strong booze, candy sugar, really nice.

12 oz bottle. Pours a reddish copper color with moderate head. Aromas of toffee, sweet malts, dried fruit and alcohol. Rich flavors of same but alcohol distracts. So are they saying this is a bad beer trying to be better steeped in figs?

Bottle, 2011. Pours hazy burnt umber, small tan head, dissipates quickly, some lacing. Aroma is toffee, caramel, bread. Flavor is medium sweet, light plus bitter, vanilla, toffee. Medium body, a bit hot, but given the ABV I would say it is well hidden.

Bottle sample at a tasting at the Beer & Beyond shop. Thanks Amit. Clear deep golden-copper. Aroma of malt, some dark fruits and lots of alcohol. Sweet and very boozy flavor, malty and fruity with a slightly bitterish finish. Boozy mouthfeel. Hard to drink.

12 ounce bottle into signature tulip glass, bottled in 2010A. Pours hazy reddish copper color with a 1 finger dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big raisin, plum, cherry, fig, date, pear, apple, caramel, brown sugar, toast, toffee, brown bread, light herbal, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with good complexity and balance of big fruitiness and dark/bready malt sweetness; with great strength. Taste of big raisin, plum, cherry, fig, date, pear, apple, caramel, brown sugar, toast, toffee, brown bread, herbal, light pepper, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Slight earthy/peppery bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of raisin, plum, cherry, fig, date, pear, apple, caramel, brown sugar, toast, toffee, brown bread, and yeast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice complexity and balance of fruitiness and dark/bready malt sweetness; with zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a smooth, fairly crisp, and lightly slick mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a light warming present after the finish. Overall this is an excellent barleywine style! All around great complexity and balance of fruitiness and dark/bready malt sweetness; and very smooth to sip on for the big ABV. A very enjoyable offering.
