Extra Hoppy Brown Ale
Collaborators: Richard Norgrove Jr., Brewmaster, Bear Republic Brewing Co. / Matt Cole, Brewmaster, Fat Head's Brewery / Mitch Steele, Brewmaster, Stone Brewing Co.
Nothing says Christmas like hanging out with good friends and brewing up something special. Thanks to Matt Cole from Fat Head's and Richard (Ricardo) Norgrove from Bear Republic for braving pre-holiday travel to come to Stone the week before the Christmas holiday and brew this “sort of” old-school American (or Texas) brown ale. The recipe we came up with has a host of specialty malts, molasses, brown sugar, Columbus, Bravo, Brewer's Gold and, for the first time ever at Stone, Cascade hops! We’re hoping our brew brings back fond memories of some of the earliest classic craft brews. Enjoy your trip down memory lane!
A throwback to the early days of craft brewing with some interesting twists along the way. It has that classic Brewer's Gold/Cascade hop presence, with combinations of herbs, pine and citrus.

Bottle as shown. Pours a cloudy amber with a thick creamy off white head leaving sticky lacing along the glass. The aroma is pine hop and citrus. Thin mouthfeel with a sweet hop and wheat and light bitter finish. Alcohol present but easy to drink, a very good American strong ale.

Sample at Jackie O’s as part of Ohio Brew Week. The beer is a clear dark brown color with a medium light tan head that recedes steadily. Partial rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of bready malt, caramel and hops. Medium body with flavors of caramel malt, piney hops and a bit of fruit. The finish is sweet malt up front and leaves a lingering hoppy aftertaste. Above average overall.

Sample at Ale Wine & Spirits in Powell on 03/15/2012. This beer is dark brown with a medium foamy off-white head that dissipates slowly. Partial rings of lacing on the glass. Notes of roasted malt, fruit and hops. Medium body with a citrusy hops character and flavors of toasted malt, molasses and caramel. The finish is hoppy and toasty. Above average overall.

Total Wine, Fairfax 12oz ($4): Pours a brown colour with a beige head. Citrus, floral hops, with a bunch of malts and stuff. Somewhat hoppy and leaves a nice solid aftertaste. A bunch of astringency there is. Nice dark malts going up in this here thing. This is slightly sweet beer, but only ever so slightly. Nice mouthfeel and body.

12oz bottle pours a deep, garnet red with a creamy, off white head. Nose is nice, brown sugar, raisins, caramel, toast, some mint iced tea. Flavor has some odd citrus, overly bitter, rhubarb, bitter greens, a little cardboard, some caramel, white pepper. Full bodied, astringent finish. Another off collaboration by Stone.

12oz bottle, poured a mostly brown color with a off-white head. Aroma was a hoppy, slight nut brown. Caramel notes, touch of hops, with some citrus. This was pretty enjoyable.

Extra hoppy, looks red. Medium carbonation, not too fizzy. It’s pretty much just hoppy and bitter, not too much character. Should be an IPA, not TBA. THere’s a little roasted molasses, caramelized taste in there. Bottle from Central Market in Burlington

Nice brown ale, one with its origins in the original Pete’s Wicked Ale. Much beefier, sweeter, with very noticeable swaths of molasses rolling through. No mistake about the Cascade hops, either, providing a strong, piney counterpoint that keeps the veins of sweetness in check. I wish there was more of a distinguishing feature of this brew other than that it reminds me of Pete’s, but that’s a mild dissent. Solid beer.
