A hellaciously herbaceous collaboration of flavor. Collaborators: Sam Calagione, President & Founder, Dogfish Head Craft Brewery / Bill Covaleski, President & Co-founder, Victory Brewing Co. / Greg Koch, CEO & Co-founder, Stone Brewing

This saison has been infused with a herbaceous blend of Stone Farms and locally harvested sage, lemon thyme, rosemary and parsley and dry-hopped with Citra hops for a refreshing finish. First brewed in 2010, this citrusy farmhouse ale was named Saison du BUFF in tribute to the ad hoc coalition that Sam (Dogfish Head), Bill (Victory) and Greg (Stone) formed in 2003. Called Brewers United for Freedom of Flavor (BUFF), it was their way to show the beer industry that they were banding together to make room on the shelf for craft beer. Six years later this farm-to-kettle beer still boasts the use of freshly picked local herbs as well as Citra and Centennial hops to infuse crisp, savory, mouthwatering flavors.

Bottle. Fragrant, luxuriant citrus nose, mostly like mandarin oranges. Also interesting herbs, grassy, ginger coming through as well. Interesing and somewhat shocking aroma.  Slightly cloudy gold with a low, fine head. Sweet ginger and orange flavor, and yes, the rosemary, thyme, and other herbs come in as well. Very spicy, herbal, citric. Strongly bitter finish, almost astringent, and a bit lacking in integration. The after taste is really getting to me in an unpleasant way. Intesting and flavorful, yes, but i’m not sure I really like it much!

12 oz. bottle, $1.50 @ Binny’s last year. Too bad I could hoard all three in this series together, but I wasn’t sure they’d all be available here. And this one’s sat in my basement a while longer. Still, shows a nice golden Belgian ale body under a big white head. Smell has rosemary (that’s for remembrance). After the foam settles, there’s still a steady stream of bubbles at work. Taste just swells with those Simon and Garfunkel spices again, overwhelming the light malts. A little too far over the edge to enjoy as a good ol’ beer, and I’m sure that’s how they want it.

12 oz. bottle, pours cloudy yellow with a big white head. Big barnyard funk, citrus and hay on the nose. Flavour is full of both citrus fruits and plenty of coriander, with a noticeable funkiness that kicks in later and a slightly sour, yeasty and citrusy finish. Crisp, clean, refreshing palate. Very solid.

A lightly hazed golden saison with a thin white head. In aroma, super fragrant and perfumey, mangoes, papaya, pineapple, a tropical fruit salad in the nose. In mouth, more saison like , with nice herbaceous qualities, curacao, incense, wild hops, very nice and smooth. 4$ for a 12 on bottle.

This beer pours a hazy yellow-gold color with a medium thick and foamy white head that burns away slowly. Patched of lacing. Lemony, floral aroma with some yeast notes. Light body with flavors of citrus, bready malt, floral hops and yeast. The finish is midly spiced and citrusy. Above average overall.

Bottle. Pours golden with a big white head. Herbal aroma, in a fresh way rather than spicy. Pleasant belgian saison with lots of oranges

Bottle. Pours golden with a big white head. The aroma has a certain citrusy soapiness to it, with notes of herbs. Taste starts out hoppy (citrus), lots of herbs/spices, with a small bitterness in the aftertaste. Unexpectedly "belgian". Kind of straight forward.
