10oz bottle at the brewpub pours a watery, deep mahogany brown, almost black with some creamy, cloudy white head. Nose is lightly smokey, malty, dark German rye bread, toast, a little grass, some waxiness, chocolate, wet soil. Flavor is malty, cocoa pods, a little grass, some noble hop bitterness, dried leaves, toasted bread. Very dry, chalky finish. An interesting take for Russian River.

On tap at the brewpub. Pours with a very deep brown body and a tan head. Aromas are hoppy with fruit, pepper, jasmine, currant and buckwheat. Flavors are peppery, grainy and fruity (hoppy and estery). Poached pear with a distinct earthy and citrus note. Lively and dry. Excellent as always.

Sample at the brewpub. Pours dark brown with amber around the edges, and a medium fluffy khaki head that recedes steadily. Rigns of lacing on the glass. Aroma of grainy malt and tart fruit. Medium body with flavors of dark fruit, sweet malt and yeast. The finish is sweet with fruity esters lingering. Good brew overall.

From tap at Rose and Crown. Pours dark brown with a small tan head, nice lacing on the glass. Aroma is dry malty and vegetable like. Flat malty and light vegetable like flavoured. Slight breadish note. Dry malty finish. Boring.

Draft, Russian River. Pliny the Younger 2010 release. Another semi-disappointment from this day. Rejection isn’t bad, but my standard for RR is unbelievably high and this beer is fairly forgettable and outshone by almost all of the rest of the menu. It pours coffee black with a thin off-white head. There’s a fair bit more candi sugar presence than expected. The flavor is mostly coffee/cocoa with some background malt fruitiness and a touch of Belgian yeast. I found the mouthfeel to be a bit grainy leading to a somewhat thin, watery finish. This wasn’t great, but I certainly wouldn’t turn down a glass, either. It’s hard to tell how much the riches of SF Beer Week are effecting my relative rating scale.

On tap @ the brewpub. Pours deep clear brown with amber edges and dark tan head to go along with some nice lacing. The mild aroma has notes of dark fruit and a sense of roasted malts. The taste has nice dark Belgian candi sugar note mingling with ripe sugar drenched plums and prunes. I get highly roasted malts in the background helping to create a dry finish. Very nice. Leaves a very dry sensation with only a memory of the rich dark fruity goodness.

Draft. Dark beer with a nice off-white head. Light roasty/caramel/malty aroma. Plum fruits, caramel, and lots of malt in the flavor with light sourness. Easy ending.

Dark opaque brown with no head. Sweet caramel taste with a mocha aroma. On tap at the pub.

Draught at the brewpub. Opaque black. Dry with clean mouthfeel. Vague notes of cardamom. Salty and pleasantly hoppy with a little bit of chocolate. Surprisingly light flavoured.
