Our Brewmaster had a penchant for English ale, so he created something better, combining two styles of ales he fancied while studying and brewing his way across the UK. It’s an ingenius hybrid of a Northern Brown Ale and a Midlands Mild, with a body tweaked to give it a lighter, more North American appeal.
Hints of roasted nuts, caramel, chocolate, and coffee combine to make this award winner one of Ontario’s best-selling craft beers.

Pours a deep red-brown-cola colour with a big creamy tanned head. The retention is quite good and the creamy-foam lacing is great. Aromas of rusty malt, dark malt, mild coffee and chocolate. The mouthfeel is creamy and light, but then again, that is what is written on the can (mild, light body, full flavour). And full flavour it is ! Mild bitterness with chocolate, nut, roasted malt, caramel, molasses and a crisp finish. Hockley Valley Brewing recommends drinking this beer cool, not cold, around 10-12 degrees Celcius. The LCBO site recommends drinking this with BBQ beef, grilled salmon, brown rice or fried shitake mushrooms. Extremely refreshing for a dark ale, great flavours and well recommended.

Can from matt7215. Thanks once more. Pours a dark ruby brown with a frothy beige head. Aromas of dark roasted malt and chocolate and citrus. Medium body with creamy/frothy carbonation. Flavor is chocolate, and barring some dark malt that’s it. Finishes mildly bitter and chocolate. It’s a mild brown ale, and all the chocolate makes it quite tasty. Damn good beer.

473ml can from Garthicus. Nose of some caramel and a bit of butter (diacetyl). Clear cherry brown with a medium beige head. Flavor is butter and some toffee. Might be pretty good without the diacetyl.

473 mL can from matt7215. Thanks! This is a brown ale? Huh. Wouldn’t have guessed when I tasted this during a Ratebeer site crash. Reddish brown pour with a medium frothy head. Grainy roasted malt aroma with hints of chocolate and coffee. Taste is very strong coffee with some grainy notes. A little thin but very pleasant.

Canned at RBESG 2007. An amber beer with a thin tan head. The aroma is sweet with notes of malt and bread as well as a light note of caramel. The flavor is weet with notes of straw and malt as well as a light note of straw, leading to a dry bitter and strawy finish. The body is thin.
