The collaborative beer was the work of five brewers - Sam Calagione (Dogfish), Tomme Arthur (The Lost Abbey), Adam Avery (Avery Brewing), Rob Todd (Allagash), and Vinnie Cirulzo (Russian River). The guys all took a trip to Belgium together a few years back and decided to make a beer together - this is it. The beer was brewed at Tomme's brewery and each company put in a few barrels of beer and some of their house yeast. The result is a tasty sour ale. The original label artwork was painstakingly painted by Sam Calagione.

Rating #7000. 750mL bottle, pours a cloudy golden with a very small white head. Aroma is extremely complex, with notes of brett, sweet mandarin oranges, and oak. Flavour is amazingly complex, with loads of brett, oak, and oranges. After all these years, the complexity is supreme and it shows no sign of going downhill. Highly complex, wild, and oaky. Wonderful stuff - a treat to try.

22/IV/13 - 75cl bottle @ De Hopduvel (Gent) - BB: n/a (2013-375) Thanks to Bobochamp (and thus to Kraddel as well) for sharing the bottle!

Little cloudy orange beer, no head. Aroma: sour, funky, sweet ripe tangerines, orange peel, some overripe fruits, banana peel, little chemical touch, dusty, wood, hint of almonds. MF: soft to no carbon, medium body. Taste: almonds at first, very sour, lemony, green apples, woody, bitter, earthy touch. Aftertaste: pretty bitter, wood, apple skin, bit nutty, sourness burning your throat, orange peel, bit spicy, earthy, typical bretta flavours in the end. Maybe a bit too sour to maintain drinkability. Very refreshing though.

Shared at a Lost Abbey sour tasting. Poured a light orange color with no head on this particular brew. Aroma is pretty tart, but the flavor is not nearly as tart. Some earthy notes are in there. This was quite enjoyable.

From Bottle at Sour & Bitter 2012. It pours light orange, with a thin white head. The nose is floral, golden syrup, some tartness, raisin, tangy marmalade, nectarine, almond, vanilla, marzipan and toasted coconut. The taste is sour lemon, white grape, Granny Smith apple, touch of vinegar, floral, hay, some alcohol warmth, vanilla and almond, with a dry, very tart finish. Medium body and lowish carbonation. Delicious and pretty easy to drink, but perhaps lacks a bit of the complexity that some of the great lambics have. Still it’s a great beer.

Sample @ the Sour & Bitter event in Copenhagen. Pours very hazy golden, almost milky golden, with a very small white head that quickly dissipates without leaving any trace. Smell is slightly sweet and sour with ripe grapes, raisins, lemon juice, plums, hay, horse blanket and funk. Taste is sour with green grapes, grape zest, lemon juice, grapefruit juice, lemon zest, hay, plums, horse blanket, leather and sweat. Mouthfeel is tart, slightly mouthpuckering, dry and medium bodied. Finish is sour with hay, plums, grapes and lemon zest. Very nice!

What can I say? Richard AKA IrishBoy hooked me up! Perpetual gratitude. This is truly an amazing beer. You know those moments when everyone is silenced and just smells the beer? This was one. Nobody wanted to finish it. Pours a golden color with a small white head. A powerful nose of sour woody notes with rich tartness, very akin to a great lambic. The flavor is just wonderful; rich tart fruit, woody, very acidic at times, aggressive, lemons, a full rich body, vanilla, more tannins. Amazing brew. Among my favorites.
