A firm favourite with the customers who have fond memories of the days when this beer would be “mulled” using a red hot poker, to enhance it’s aroma. It is brewed using pale, crystal and black malts with a little high maltose syrup. The beer’s natural sweetness is balanced using Progress, Fuggle and Golding hops.
A warming aroma with hints of chocolate, fruit and malt gives way to a complex full palate of chocolate, fruit and liquorice. The finish is long and the overall impression is of a superbly crafted, smooth and well-balanced beer, which many will testify is deceptively strong.

Cask at The Bulls Head, Birmingham. Dark brown with a tan head. Aroma of overripe dark fruits, caramel, hairspray, mold, medicinal notes. Flavour is above moderate sweet and light moderate bitter. Medium bodied with very soft carbonation.

Cask at the Bulls Head, Birmingham. Poured a reddish brown with a thin broken off white head. The aroma is malt, toffee caramel, dry floral hop, some yeast notes. The flavour is moderate bitter light sweet with a light smooth malty, floral hop, red berry fruit palate. Medium bodied with soft carbonation.

Cask (handpump) @ NWAF 2012, National Winter Ales Festival, The Venue, Sheridan Suite, Manchester, England.Clear dark red brown color with a small to average, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white to beige head. Aroma is moderate malty, caramel, sweet dark malt - fruit. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and light to light moderate bitter with a long duration, dark berry sweet. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft to flat. [20120119]

Cask at Cockney Pub. Creamy lightbrown good fully lasting head. Dark red-amber colour. Moderate malty aroma. Fantastic bitter flavor. Loads of chocolate notes. Moderate bitter long finish. Creamy palate. Excellent beer.

Dark color. Sourish apple flavor, mild moutheef, light chocolate flavor, absent bitterness. Too simple.

Almost black color. The aroma is mild, with some caramel, yeast and apples. It has a medium body strength, no carbonation, mellow mouthfeel, with a flavor that ranges between caramel, roasted malt, yeast, apples; some residual sweetness too; and the final has some more roasted malt. Similar to a Mild, maybe too yeasty, anyway simple.
